The song of the day for Tuesday, January 7, 2020, is “A Shine On Your Shoes.”

About This Song

“A Shine On Your Shoes” was written by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz for the 1932 Broadway musical Flying Colors. The same song was used for the 1953 movie The Band Wagon, which starred Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “A Shine On Your Shoes” for his 1993 album Steppin’ Out, which features songs sung (and danced) by Fred Astaire. Bennett and Ralph Sharon arranged the song.

Steppin’ Out won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

“A Shine On Your Shoes,” as well as Steppin’ Out, is available from iTunes.

And now Fred Astaire!

“For the “Shine on My Shoes” number, Fred Astaire wanted to dance with the bootblack. They found the real thing in Leroy Daniels, a dancing shoeshine man working in downtown Los Angeles. ReelRundown has an excellent story about Leroy Daniels.

Song of the Day: Lullaby of Broadway

The song of the day for Sunday, January 5, 2020, is “Lullaby of Broadway.”

About Today

Every weekend for the rest of 2020, I’ll be featuring recordings of Tony’s live performances, in order by date. I hope you enjoy Tony Live!

About This Song

“Lullaby of Broadway,” written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, was introduced in the 1935 movie Gold Diggers of 1935; it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It is one of the great show biz anthems. The 1980 musical 42nd Street featured Jerry Orbach singing the song. (I only mention this as I had the good fortune to see this show soon after it opened and Mr. Orbach was wonderful!)

About This Version

Tony Bennett opened his legendary 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall with “Lullaby of Broadway.” The concert was recorded and was released as Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall. Ralph Sharon was the musical director for this show and wrote the arrangements.

“Lullaby of Broadway,” as well as Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall, is available from iTunes.

Song of the Day: Last Night When We Were Young

The song of the day for Sunday, December 29, 2019, is “Last Night When We Were Young.”

About This Song

“Last Night When We Were Young” was written in 1935 by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg. Arlen considered it to be one of his favorite songs. In American Popular Song, Alec Wilder calls it a “most remarkable and beautiful song … (that) goes far beyond the boundaries of popular music.” Yip Harburg has said that he doesn’t know exactly where the title came from but that “the juxtaposition of those two phrases is almost a whole world of philosophy.” All in all, it’s a very beautiful and introspective song that is much beloved by singers. Frank Sinatra included on his wonderful album In The Wee Small Hours. It has also been recorded by Judy Garland, Mel Tormé, Carmen McRae and Tony Bennett.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Last Night When We Were Young” in 1992 for the album Perfectly Frank. Ralph Sharon wrote the arrangement.

“Last Night When We Were Young,” as well as Perfectly Frank, is available from iTunes.

Song of the Day: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered

The song of the day for Friday, December 27, 2019, is “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”

About This Song

“Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, was one of the hit songs from the 1940 musical Pal Joey, where it was introduced by Vivienne Segal. Notable recordings are by Benny Goodman, Mel Tormé, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. Alec Wilder admired the lyric and the verse, but found the song “notey.” In spite of being notey, it’s a cornerstone of the American Songbook.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” with Ralph Sharon on October 28, 1959, for their groundbreaking album Tony Sings For Two, released in 1961.

“Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” as well as Tony Sings For Two, is available from iTunes.
