Song of the Day: You’re All The World To Me

The song of the day for Friday, September 5, 2025, is “You’re All The World To Me.”

About This Song

“You’re All The World To Me” was written by Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner for the 1951 MGM musical Royal Wedding, starring Fred Astaire. Astaire performed this song in one of the most famous shots in all of musical film: the dancing on the ceiling number.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “You’re All The World To Me” in June 1993 for his album Steppin’ Out. Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon wrote the arrangement.

“You’re All The World To Me,” as well as Steppin’ Out, is available on Apple Music.

Steppin’ Out won the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance.

Remembering Bill Evans

I messed up, as I forgot to check my Year of Tony Bennett calendar and so missed honoring Bill Evans on the anniversary of his birth on August 16, 1929.

I want to make it up by featuring one of his piano solos on his second album with Tony Bennett: Tony Bennett and Bill Evans Together Again, released in 1977.

Over the three days when they recorded this album, Evans was working on the theme song from the 1952 film The Bad and the Beautiful. Tony Bennett loved it so much, he asked that it be included on their album. “The Bad and the Beautiful” was written by David Raksin and Dory Langdon.

Song of the Day: Taking a Chance on Love

The song of the day for Wednesday, August 21, 2019, is “Taking a Chance on Love.”

About Today

Today we are celebrating the life and music of William James Basie, who was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 21, 1904. In addition to his fine work on the piano, Count Basie was one of best and longest-lasting big band leaders. He founded the Count Basie Orchestra in 1935 and that orchestra is still playing today. Some of America’s finest jazz musicians played with Basie, including Buck Clayton, Lester Young, Thad Jones, Jo J0nes, Buddy Rich, and Paul Gonsalves are just a few of former members of the Count Basie Orchestra. Harold Jones, called Count Basie’s favorite drummer, currently plays in Tony Bennett’s quartet.

About This Song

“Taking a Chance on Love” was written by Vernon Duke, with lyrics by John LaTouche and Ted Fetter, for the 1940 BRoadway musical Cabin in the Sky, where it was introduced by the great Ethel Waters and Dooley Wilson. The song works well for both jazz singers and instrumentalists, with significant recordings by Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, Judy Garland, and Dizzy Gillespie.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Taking a Chance on Love” in 1958 for his second album with Count Basie and His Orchestra, In Person!, released in 1959. Ralph Sharon wrote the arrangement.
