Song of the Day: You Go To My Head

The song of the day for Tuesday, October 22, 2019, is “You Go To My Head.”

About This Song

“You Go To My Head” was written in 1938 by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie. Composed by the same songwriting team that gave us “Santa Claus is Coming To Town,” “You Go to My Head” is a well-respected popular song. In American Popular Song, Alec Wilder called it “a phenomenon” and “a minor masterpiece.” Al Gioia in The Jazz Standards notes that “this song comes closer than any tune I know to capturing in musical form the feeling of losing control.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “You Go To My Head” in 1992 for the album Perfectly Frank, consisting of songs associated with Frank Sinatra. Ralph Sharon did the arrangement. Mr. Bennett had previously recorded “You Go To My Head” in 1957 for The Beat of My Heart, though it wasn’t released until the 1997 CD re-release of that album.

“You Go To My Head,” as well as Perfectly Frank, is available from iTunes.

About This Song

Written by the marvelous jazz pianist and composer Bob Dorough, this song is a true joy to listen to. In his liner notes for Forty/Fifty Years: The Artistry of Tony Bennett, Bennett says that “this one explains how a singer feels when he sings a song everyone likes.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “I’ve Got Just About Everything” in 1964 with the Ralph Sharon Trio (Sharon on piano, Hal Gaylord on bass, and Billy Exiner on drums) for the album When Lights Are Low.

“I’ve Got Just About Everything,” as well as When Lights Are Low, is available from iTunes.

Song of the Day: Street of Dreams

The song of the day for Thursday, October 10, 2019, is “Street of Dreams.”

About This Song

“Street of Dreams” was written in 1932 by Victor Young and Sam M. Lewis. The song has a classic depression-era sense, where love is one of the few things that may be impossible for those with money, but “no one is poor as long as love is sure.” Bing Crosby was the first singer to record “Street of Dreams”; the Russ Columbo recording was also popular.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon recorded “Street of Dreams” on October 28, 1959, at the famous CBS 30th Street Studio. On that day, Bennett and Sharon came in with nothing but a briefcase full of sheet music and recorded sixteen songs, twelve of which were released on Tony Sings For Two, which wasn’t released until 1961.

Tony remembers the session in his autobiography The Good Life:

We booked time in the studio and pored through music books, trying one tune after another. The arrangements were spontaneous, and we finished each song in one or more takes. … Mitch Miller showed up at the start of the session, furious that I was going through with it. When he saw there was no dissauding me, he turned to Frank Laico and said, “I’m leaving. I can’t support this.” Tony Sings For Two turned out to be one of my finest records ever.

“Street of Dreams,” as well as Tony Sings For Two, is available from iTunes.

About Today

Today marks the end of our salute to George Gershwin. Focusing on his music only, cements my opinion that these songs will never sound old or dated. It’s been a real pleasure to present some of these wonderful songs.

About This Song

George and Ira Gershwin wrote this song in 1931 for the Broadway musical Of Thee I Sing. It’s one of their very popular songs with many fine recordings, including those by Fred Astaire, Ella Fitzgerald, and Judy Garland. Tony Bennett sings this song regularly in his concerts.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Who Cares” in 1993 for his album Steppin’ Out. Tony and Ralph Sharon arranged the song and Sharon’s piano on this recording is exceptional.
