The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: The Best Is Yet To Come

The Song of the Day for September 30, 2012 is The Best Is Yet To Come.

About The Best Is Yet To Come

The Best is Yet To Come was written in 1929 by Cy Coleman, with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh.  The song was written for Tony Bennett, though it has been recorded by many artists, including Frank Sinatra; the phrase “The Best is Yet To Come” is engraved on Sinatra’s tombstone. Other significant recordings include those by Count Basie, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald.

About This Version

We select this song in preparation for the upcoming Viva Duets. Mr. Bennett and Chayanne will be singing this song on the album. Mr. Bennett first recorded the song in 1960, with Mr. Coleman conducting, and was released as a single in February, 1961; the same recording was included on the 1962 I Left My Heart in San Francisco album. He sang it at the 1962 Carnegie Hall concert as well. He and Diane Krall sang it for the original Duets: An American Classic album in 2006 and now again with Chayanne for Viva Duets. He also sings it regularly (though not always) in his live performances.

It’s a great song; Tony Bennett sings many songs written by Cy Coleman, and they are all excellent. Today’s version is from the 1962 Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall.

Song of the Day: It Amazes Me

We continue Ralph Sharon Week with the Song of the Day for September 18, 2012:  It Amazes Me.

About It Amazes Me

It Amazes Me was written by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh. Although this songwriting pair is well-known for their musical scores, this song was not written for a musical.

About This Version

Tony Bennett first recorded It Amazes Me in 1958 for his album Long Ago and Far Away. I’ve heard him sing it in concert several times and it never ceases to amaze me too. This live version is from the 1962 Carnegie Hall Concert. He also recorded it for the 1994 MTV Unplugged concert, again with Ralph Sharon.

Firefly

It’s a beautiful summer day and today is about joyful and happy songs. Thus, the Song of the Day for August 12, 2012 is Firefly.

About Firefly

Firefly was written by Cy Coleman (music) and Carolyn Leigh (lyrics) in 1958. Originally, it was written as an  audition piece for the planned musical Gypsy and was intended to be sung by Baby June in Act One.  Gypsy was given to Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim and was, and remains, one of the greatest American musicals ever written. Thankfully, the song Firefly survived and was recorded by Tony in 1959 for In Person! With Count Basie and His Orchestra. He also has a sweet and funny duet of this song with Kermit the Frog on The Playground, his children’s album from 1998. Kermit swings pretty good for a frog.

About This Version

Today’s version of Firefly is from Tony’s extraordinary 1962 Carnegie Hall concert.  You can hear the audience enjoying it as much I do.

I am featuring The Best Is Yet To Come for several reasons: it’s a great song and I never tire of hearing it.

This song, as much as any other song in his catalog, shows a quality of Tony that draws so much love and adoration from his fans: his innate and glorious sense of optimism. When Tony sings this song, I truly believe, along with the rest of the audience, that the best is yet to come: the best of Tony’s singing, the best of myself, and the best of the world.

Some people in our cynical world may say that this kind of optimism is Pollyanna-like and not grounded in reality. The complete opposite is true. Only a man filled with love for everything around him can give us that knowledge that the best is indeed yet to come. Likely not all at once, certainly with challenges along the way, but I come away from this song believing in its truth and the truth and honesty of the man who sings it at every concert of his I’ve ever attended. I hope and pray that he never stops singing it, because it’s a message that more people need to hear.

So thank, Tony Bennett. Out of the tree of life, I just picked me a plum.

I’m hard pressed to pick my favorite version, but there is something quite magical about this performance in the 1962 Carnegie Hall concert, recorded with Ralph Sharon conducting the orchestra.  The other three are also quite wonderful. It’s great song, sung by a singer who seems to love singing it.

Click here to view a video of Tony singing this song at the Newport Jazz Festival in 2002. Many thanks to Wolfgang’s Vault.

The Best Is Yet To Come

Music: Cy Coleman
Lyrics: Carolyn Leigh

Out of the tree of life I just picked me a plum
You came along and everything’s started to hum
Still, it’s a real good bet, the best is yet to come

The best is yet to come and babe, won’t it be fine?
You think you’ve seen the sun, but you ain’t seen it shine

Wait till the warmup’s underway
Wait till our lips have met
And wait till you see that sunshine day
You ain’t seen nothing yet

The best is yet to come and babe, won’t it be fine?
The best is yet to come, come the day you’re mine

Come the day you’re mine
I’m gonna teach you to fly
We’ve only tasted the wine
We’re gonna drain the cup dry

Wait till your charms are right for these arms to surround
You think you’ve flown before, but  you ain’t left the ground

Wait till you’re locked in my embrace
Wait till I draw you near
Wait till you see that sunshine place
Ain’t nothing like it here

The best is yet to come and babe, won’t that be fine?
The best is yet to come, come the day you’re mine

Out of the tree of life I just picked me a plum …
