The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

March 23, 2013 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: Just In The Time

The song of the day for Saturday, March 23, 2013 is Just In Time.

About This Song

Just in Time is one of the many great songs from the 1956 musical Bells Are Ringing, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

The Year of Tony Bennett chooses this song in honor of Tony Bennett’s participation in the Third March from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965. The first two marches had ended poorly, with the marchers being attacked by police with billy clubs and tear gas on the first march and not being allowed to cross Edmund Pettus Bridge on the second march. Dr. Martin Luther King enlisted Harry Belafonte to encourage  other celebrities to join the fight. Tony Bennett was the first person Belafonte reached out to. Other participants included Joan Baez, Paul Newman, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frankie Laine and Nina Simone.

On the morning of March 24, the march entered Montgomery County, Alabama. That night, there was a “Stars For Freedom” rally, with performances by the artists. There was no stage; a local funeral home offered the use of empty coffins to make a stage. Tony Bennett, visibly exhausted from the long march, sang Just In Time. In August, 1965, Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act.

June is Busting Out All Over

The Year of Tony Bennett is really excited about June. Not only are we looking forward to summer and sunshine, we are going to be attending Tony Bennett’s concert in Tacoma, Washington on June 15 at the Pantages Theater.

We also learned today that Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga will be recording their much-anticipated album in June. First of all, we’re very happy that she is recovering from her surgery and will able to hit the studio in June. Second of all, we can’t wait for this album. Tony Bennett. Lady Gaga. Jazz. Sounds great to me.

Check out this Rolling Stone interview with Tony Bennett for more information.

The New York Times also has a story.

Song of the Day: Being Alive

The Year of Tony Bennett would like to wish Stephen Sondheim a very happy birthday today. In his honor, we choose Being Alive as the song of the day for Friday, March 22, 2013.

About This Song

Being Alive is from Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 musical, Company. This production of Company has always been very special to your author. It was my first Broadway musical, my first trip to New York and my introduction to Elaine Stritch.

Robert, the only single man in a group of married couples, sings Being Alive at the end of show as he finally realizes that in order to really be alive, he must share that life with someone.

About This Version

Being Alive is from Tony Bennett’s 2004 album The Art of Romance.  This album explores the full territory of romance: start to end, good and bad and all the rest.  The album is a novel. If you have the time, take an hour to listen to it from start to finish. It’s a great journey.  Being Alive gets a terrific arrangement from Lee Musiker.

Being Alive, as well as the full The Art of Romance album, is available from iTunes.

The AWF Inspiration Award for Lifetime Achievement will be presented to Tony Bennett at this event.

For information about the Amy Winehouse Foundation and its mission to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people, please visit their US website or the foundation’s Facebook page.

We’ll be monitoring Twitter for news from this event. Meanwhile, here is their Grammy-winning duet of Body and Soul from Duets II. It was Amy’s last recording.

And it you haven’t yet seen The Zen of Bennett documentary, I highly recommend it. The scene with Tony and Amy working on this brilliant recording is quite extraordinary. This film is available for streaming from Netflix.

Happy Birthday to Marian McPartland

The Year of Tony Bennett wishes Marian McPartland a very happy 95th birthday.

Tony Bennett and Marian McPartland

Her Piano Jazz program on NPR has nurtured and created an entire generation of jazz fans, including this author. And her outstanding gifts as a jazz pianist are, thankfully, available to us to enjoy over and over, even those of us who were never able to hear her at the Hickory House.

Here’s a number from Tony Bennett’s Live with the McPartlands and Friends from 1977 on Tony’s Improv label.
