The Year of Tony Bennett would like to wish Stephen Sondheim a very happy birthday today. In his honor, we choose Being Alive as the song of the day for Friday, March 22, 2013.
About This Song
Being Alive is from Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 musical, Company. This production of Company has always been very special to your author. It was my first Broadway musical, my first trip to New York and my introduction to Elaine Stritch.
Robert, the only single man in a group of married couples, sings Being Alive at the end of show as he finally realizes that in order to really be alive, he must share that life with someone.
About This Version
Being Alive is from Tony Bennett’s 2004 album The Art of Romance. This album explores the full territory of romance: start to end, good and bad and all the rest. The album is a novel. If you have the time, take an hour to listen to it from start to finish. It’s a great journey. Being Alive gets a terrific arrangement from Lee Musiker.
