The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

January 28, 2016 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: All In Fun

The song of the day for Thursday, January 28, 2016 is “All In Fun.”

About This Song

“All In Fun” was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1939 Broadway musical Very Warm For May. Though the show was not well-reviewed, the score contained some wonderful songs including this one and “All The Things You Are.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “All In Fun” in 2004 for his wonderful album The Art of Romance. I fell in love with Tony Bennett when I first heard this album. I given this album to friends and they’ve fallen in love as well. The album explores the nature and arc of romance, from beginning to end. The album is warm, funny, gorgeous, sad and gloriously happy. Kind of like romance. “All In Fun” was arranged by Lee Musiker.

Song of the Day: All The Things You Are

The song of the day for Monday, January 4, 2016 is “All The Things You Are.”

About This Song

“All The Things You Are” was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein for the 1939 musical Very Warm For May. In American Popular Song, Alec Wilder considers it to be one of Kern’s finest songs and with good reason. It’s a beautiful tune and Hammerstein’s lyrics are excellent. It is a worthy song for our celebration of Jerome Kern this month.

About This Version

Tony Bennett has recorded “All The Things You Are Twice”: first in 1962 at his concert and Carnegie Hall and again in 2016 for his album with Bill Charlap, The Silver Lining. Both versions are lovely, but I fell in love hard with the 1962 version the first time I heard it and so am featuring it today. The 1962 version was arranged by Ralph Sharon.

Song of the Day: All The Things You Are

The song of the day for Sunday, July 12, 2015 is “All The Things You Are.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett has only recorded this song once: in 1962 for his legendary concert at Carnegie Hall. It is the third song in the show, following yesterday’s song of the day, “Just In Time.” He sings this song with its gorgeous Kern melody so beautifully.

About Today

The lyricist of today’s song, Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein II, was born 120 years ago on July 12, 1895 in New York City. His family was prominent in the New York Theater, though his father wanted his son to study law. Hammerstein soon dropped out of Columbia to pursue a career in theater. Early on, he worked with Otto Harbach, with whom he wrote his first musical, Always You, in 1920.

Perhaps his greatest accomplishment in his early career was the 1927 musical Show Boat, written with Jerome Kern. This musical was a significant contribution to the American Musical Theater, as it was not merely a “musical comedy,” but a serious work with music.

The second stage of his career began in the early 1940s, when he began his collaboration with Richard Rodgers. Rodgers and Lorenz Hart had begun work on an adaptation of Green Grow The Lilacs, but Hart was unable to complete the project. Thus, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein began their partnership with the 1943 musical Oklahoma!, followed by musicals including Allegro, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music.

Hammerstein was a mentor to the young Stephen Sondheim, who was a neighbor. Sondheim has written eloquently of his admiration of Hammerstein, including this:

After the Rodgers and Hammerstein revolution, songs became part of the story, as opposed to just entertainments in between comedy scenes.

Those of us who love the musical theater owe our gratitude to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, who turned musical comedy into one of the greatest American art forms.

About This Version

Tony Bennett included “All The Things You Are” in his legendary 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall. This is not only one my own personal favorites from the recording of that concert, it is one of my favorite of all the songs that Tony Bennett has recorded.

About Today

The Year of Tony Bennett is pleased to honor the music of Jerome Kern, who was born on January 27, 1885 in New York City. He showed musical talent early in his life and was taught piano by his mother, an accomplished musician. He went on to study at the New York College of Music after high school. He worked as a rehearsal pianist and also as a song plugger. He began composing additions to musicals imported from London and also for silent movies. He was one of the founding members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

He was a prolific composer for the Broadway stage in the 1910s and 1920s. In 1925, he began his long friendship and working relationship with Oscar Hammerstein II, with whom he wrote Show Boat. With the emergence of “talking pictures,” he began working in Hollywood and wrote for many musical films, including Roberta and Swing Time.

Kern died in 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 60. He was inducted posthumously into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1970.

Song of the Day: All The Things You Are

The song of the day for Tuesday, November 4, 2014 is “All The Things You Are.”

About This Song

“All The Things You Are” was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1939 for the musical Very Warm For May. It’s one of Kern’s most lovely songs and perfect Hammerstein lyric.

About This Version

Tony Bennett included this beautiful song on his 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall. The recording of the song is quite perfect; perhaps that’s why he’s never recorded it again. It’s definitely one of my favorite songs.

About Today

The Year Of Tony Bennett folks will be attending a Tony Bennett concert tomorrow and we’re definitely in the mood for live Tony Bennett. We hope you don’t mind us visiting the Carnegie Hall concert two days in a row. (No, I didn’t think you’d mind.) I absolutely love this song and Bennett’s singing on it. I hope you enjoy it too.
