October 3, 2021 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: This Can’t Be Love

The song of the day for Monday, October 4, 2021, is “This Can’t Be Love.”

About This Song

Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart wrote this song for the 1938 Broadway musical The Boys From Syracuse. It is one of their most joyous and least ironic love songs. Both Benny Goodman and Eddy Duchin recorded the song in the late 1930s. In addition to Tony Bennett’s fine recording here, “This Can’t Be Love” has also been recorded by Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Diana Krall.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “This Can’t Be Love” in 1973. It was released in 1976 on Tony Bennett Sings 10 Rodgers & Hart Songs, on Bennett’s Improv label.

About This Song

Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart wrote this song for the 1938 Broadway musical The Boys From Syracuse. It is one of their most joyous and least ironic love songs. About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “This Can’t Be Love” 1973 for Tony Bennett Sings 10 Rodgers & Hart Songs from his own label: Improv. This album, as well as the follow-on album Tony Bennett Sings More Great Rodgers and Hart, was recorded with The Ruby Braff-George Barnes Quartet, which features Braff on cornet, Barnes and Wayne Wright on guitar, and John Guiffrida on bass. This quartet–with neither piano nor drums–was perfect for these songs.

Song of the Day: Falling In Love With Love

The song of the day for Friday, July 1, 2016 is “Falling In Love With Love.”

About This Song

“Falling In Love With Love” was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart for the Broadway musical The Boys of Syracuse. The song pairs a beautiful Rodgers waltz melody with the adult and rather somber lyric by Hart: in other words, a perfect Rodgers and Hart song.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Falling In Love With Love” in 1965, with an arrangement by Don Costa. It was recorded for Bennett’s 1965 album If I Ruled The World: Songs For The Jet Set, but was not included in the original 1965 LP recorded. It was added to the first CD re-release of the album.

Song of the Day: This Can’t Be Love

The song of the day for Monday, June 1, 2015 is “This Can’t Be Love.”

About This Song

“This Can’t Be Love” was written in 1938 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart for their music The Boys Of Syracuse. I’ve always found it to be one of their least ironic and loveliest songs.

The_Boys_From_Syracuse-2

The musical The Boys Of Syracuse was based on Shakespeare’s A Comedy Of Errors. It was directed by George Abbott (who also wrote the book) and was choreographed by Jerome Robbins. The production ran for 235 performances.

In addition to this wonderful song, the score also contains two other favorites of mine: “Falling In Love With Love” and “Sing For Supper.”

Tony Bennett recorded Falling In Love With Love in 1965 for If I Ruled The World: Songs For the Jet Set and was arranged by Don Costa. It was released as bonus track on the CD reissue.

This version of “Sing For Your Supper” is from a 1997 studio recording of an Encores production that restored the original 1938 arrangements. The singers are Rebecca Luker, Debbie Gravitte and Sarah Uriarte Berry. Their trio is delightful.

About This Version

“This Can’t Be Love” was the first cut on Tony Bennett Sings 10 Rodgers & Hart Songs. It’s a fun, uptempo song that’s perfect to open the album with. I was completely sold as soon as I heard the first guitar chords followed by Bennett starting the song. Really, it’s perfect.

Song of the Day: Falling In Love With Love

The song of the day for Saturday, February 28, 2015 is “Falling In Love With Love.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Falling In Love With Love,” is one of the many hit songs from the 1938 musical The Boys of Syracuse by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The musical is based on Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, as adapted by George Abbot. It’s one of their most charming scores.

About This Version

“Falling In Love With Love” was not released on the original album of If I Ruled The World, but was added for the re-release of the album on CD in 1997. It’s really a wonderful arrangement. In the context of the song in the production, the song is sung by women who are working at their spinning wheels; the lovely opening verse (thanks, as always, for singing the verse, Mr. Bennett), you can not only hear but almost see those spinning wheels

This is our last song from the February album of the month: If I Ruled The World: Songs For The Jet Set. The album for March will be announced tomorrow and I hope you will love it as much as I do.

About Today

It’s YouTube Saturday. Today we feature Tony singing another of the great songs from The Boys From Syracuse: “This Can’t Be Love.”

And, while we’re at it, here’s one of my favorite songs from the same show: “Sing For Your Supper,” with Rebecca Luker, Debbie Shapiro Gravitte and Christine Ebersole.

And, if you’re like me and can’t get enough of this fabulous score, here’s the cast recording from the 1997 Broadway revival, courtesy of our friends as Spotify.
