The song of the day for Friday, November 7, 2025, is “Just One of Those Things.”

About This Song

“Just One of Those Things” was written by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical Jubilee. During rehearsals, Moss Hart, the librettist, that an additional song was needed, and Porter wrote the song overnight. “Just One of Those Things” has been widely recorded. Significant recordings include those by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Nat Cole, and many more.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Just One of Those Things” for his 2021 album Love For Sale. Marion Evans wrote the arrangement and conducted the big band.

Note that most of the songs on this album are duets with Lady Gaga; however each artist had two solo recordings in addition to the duets. including today’s song.

Love For Sale won the 64th Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

About This Song

“Just One Of Those Things” was written by Cole Porter for the 1935 musical Jubilee. It’s one of Porter’s most popular songs and has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Alec Wilder in American Popular Song spoke of the lyric as ‘a trip to the moon on gossamer wings’ and “that it seems impossible that it wasn’t sitting on his piano, waiting for Porter even before he wrote the lyric.” It has a certain literary fame as well: Holden Caulfied, in Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye likes the song and notes that even the “stinking band” in the hotel lounge “couldn’t ruin it entirely.”

The song of the day for Friday, June 9, 2023, is “So In Love.”

About Today

Today we are celebrating the birth of one of America’s greatest songwriters, Cole Porter. Porter was born to a wealthy family on June 9, 1891, in Peru, Indiana. The family wanted Porter to study law and Porter enrolled at Yale University. However, Porter had other ideas and majored in English, with a minor in Music. He sang with the Whiffenpoofs and was the president of the Yale Glee Club, all while writing over 300 songs. He did enroll in Law School at Harvard, but soon left to to study music. In 1915, a song of his was included in a Broadway revue.

His career was legendary — he wrote music and lyrics for many Broadway musicals and also for Hollywood. His stage triumphs include Kiss Me Kate, Anything Goes, Can Can, and Silk Stockings. His film scores include The Pirate, Les Girls, and High Society.

“So In Love” was written by Cole Porter in 1948 for Kiss Me Kate, where it was introduced by Patricia Morrison. The song has been widely recorded by singers including Julie Andrews, Ella Fitzgerald, k.d. lang, Patti Page, Dinah Washington and many more.

Cole Porter wrote “Dream Dancing” for the 1941 movie You’ll Never Get Rich, though it was introduced only in its instrumental form. The first recording of the song, with lyrics, was made by Fred Astaire in the same year, with The Delta Rhythm Boys. Other recordings include those by Ella Fitzgerald, Zoot Zims with Jimmy Rowles, and Mel Tormé.
