The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: How Do You Keep The Music Playing?

The song of the day for Saturday, August 29, 2015 is “How Do You Keep The Music Playing”?

About This Song

Today’s song, “How Do You Keep The Music Playing”, was composed by Michel Legrand with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. It was written for the 1982 movie Best Friends, which starred Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn. The initial recording was a duet by Patti Austin and James Ingram, which became a hit single in 1983. It was one of three songs with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman that were nominated that year for an Academy Award for Best Song (though the award went to “Up Where We Belong” from the movie An Officer and a Gentleman). The song has become a popular standard and has had many fine recordings, including those by Frank Sinatra (who encouraged Bennett to sing this song), Frankie Laine, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Tony Bennett and George Michael and, most recently, Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin

About This Version

Today we hear Mr. Bennett’s first, and solo, recording from The Art of Excellence, recorded in 1986. It was arranged and conducted by Jorge Calandrelli. This album was the first album Bennett made with Columbia when he returned to the label in the 1980s. In his autobiography, The Good Life, Bennett writes

My new record would be called The Art Of Excellence, referring not only to the songs, but also to my demand for quality. From that day forward people would expect nothing less from Tony Bennett.

It is most definitely one of his best albums and is frequently played in my household for sure. The wonderful cover photograph is by Annie Leibovitz.

Song of the Day: Moments Like This

The song of the day for Wednesday, November 27, 2013 is “Moments Like This.”

About This Song

“Moments Like This” was written by Burton Lane (music) and Frank Loesser (lyrics) for the 1938 movie College Swing, starring Florence George, who introduced the song. It is a great ballad and got several good recordings when it was first released, including those by Maxine Sullivan, Dick Stabile and His Orchestra, and Teddy Wilson. Tony Bennett is credited (by Thomas Hischak in The American Musical Film Song Encyclopedia) for generating new interest in the song with his 1986 recording.

About This Version

Today’s song is from what is, as far as I’m concerned, the greatest come-back album ever: The Art of Excellence. And excellent it was. The album was produced by Danny Bennett and Ettore Stratta, whose song “Forget The Woman” was included on the album. The Ralph Sharon Trio, with Paul Langosch on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums, played on the album. The orchestra was conducted by the Argentine composer, arranger and orchestrator Jorge Calandrelli. Mr. Calandrelli continues to work with Tony Bennett on his albums up to today. The great cover photography is by Annie Leibowitz. Excellence everywhere. Including today’s song.

Song of the Day: Speak Low

The song of the day for Thursday, November 14, 2013 is “Speak Low.”

About This Song

“Speak Low” was written by Kurt Weill, with lyrics by poet Ogden Nash, for the 1943 Broadway musical One Touch of Venus. The song was introduced by the two stars: Mary Martin and Kenny Baker. Guy Lombardo recorded one of the first versions of this song that became a big hit.

This song is now considered a jazz standard (#120 on jazzstandards.com) and has received many fine recordings, including those by Tony Bennett (who first recorded it in 1959 for the album To My Wonderful One), Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, and Barbra Streisand. You can read more about Speak Low at The Interactive Tony Bennett Discography.

About This Version

Tony Bennett included “Speak Low” on his autobiographical 1990 album Astoria: Portrait of the Artist. This songs on the album are the story of his return to Astoria after serving in Europe during World War II. In Astoria, we hear about the hopes and dreams of a young man finding his way, thinking about the future and his love for his hometown. Astoria is one of my very favorite Tony Bennett albums.

“Speak Low,” as well as the entire album, was arranged and conducted by Jorge Calandrelli, with whom Mr. Bennett has worked with steadily up to today.

Song of the Day: Don’t Like Goodbyes

The song of the day for Monday, July 22, 2013 is “Don’t Like Goodbyes.”

About This Song

“Don’t Like Goodbyes” is from the score for the Harold Arlen – Truman Capote musical House of Flowers, written in 1954.

About This Version

Today’s song is from Tony’s 2004 album The Art of Romance. This album will always have a very special place in my heart. I bought this album on the day it came out and don’t think I listened to anything else for days. I absolutely adore this album. The choice of songs tells the stories of romance, from beginnings to the periods that you know (or at least hope) will never end to the breakups. It’s beautifully recorded and produced as well. And yes, the cover photograph knocks my socks off. “Don’t Like Goodbyes” was arranged by the great Jorge Calandrelli, who has worked frequently with Tony Bennett since 1986 for The Art of Excellence.
