Song of the Day: The Girl I Love

The song of the day for Tuesday, September 13, 2016 is “The Girl I Love.”

About This Song

–
“The Girl I Love” was originally written for the 1924 Broadway musical Lady, Be Good by George and Ira Gershwin, though it was cut from that production. It was used again in 1927 for Strike Up The Band, but that production closed out of town. The lyrics were revised to “The Man I Love” for the 1928 Rosalie, but was cut from that production as well. In spite of all that, it rightly has its place as one of the great songs in the American Songbook. Notable recordings include those by Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Forrest, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Helen Morgan and many, many more.

About This Version

Tony Bennett has recorded “The Girl I Love” several times. Today I chose his 1989 version from Astoria: Portrait of the Artist. The arrangement is by Jorge Calandrelli.

Song of the Day: The Boulevard of Broken Dreams

The song of the day for is “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”

About This Song

Harry Warren and Al Dubin wrote “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams” in 1933 for the movie Moulin Rouge, where it was sung by Constance Bennett. Although numerous artists have recorded “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (including Bing Crosby 1944), this song is very strongly identified with Tony Bennett. In fact, his demo record of “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams” was heard by Mitch Miller and got Bennett his first recording contract with Columbia Records.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this song several times early in his career. As much as I love those recordings, I am quite partial to this version from Bennett’s 1989 recording for Astoria: Portrait of the Artist, released in 1990. The arrangement is by Jorge Calandrelli.

Song of the Day: When Do The Bells Ring For Me?

The song of the day for Thursday, October 15, 2015 is “When Do The Bells Ring For Me?”

About This Song

This song was written by New York cabaret artist Charles DeForest in 1989 especially for Tony Bennett to sing on Astoria: Portrait of the Artist. DeForest got his professional start as a singer for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, but soon set out on his own as a performer in piano bars and cabarets in Manhattan. He won several awards for his cabaret work, including those from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets in 1994 and 1996 and the Mabel Mercer Foundation in 1992. Mr. DeForest died in 1992. “When Do The Bells Ring For Me?” became his signature song.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded ” When Do The Bells Ring For Me?” on May 16, 1989 for his autobiographical album Astoria: Portrait of the Artist, released in 1990. The very effective arrangement is by Jorge Calandrelli, who also conducted the album. The album features the Ralph Sharon Trio, with Paul Langosch on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. Ralph Sharon’s piano is especially fine on this recording. The orchestra is The U.K. Orchestra Limited.

Song of the Day: How Do You Keep The Music Playing?

The song of the day for Saturday, October 3, 2015 is “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?”

About This Song

Today’s song, “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?”, was written in 1982, with music by Michel Legrand and lyrics from Alan and Marilyn Bergman. This song was written for the 1982 movie Best Friends, which starred Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn. The initial recording was a duet by Patti Austin and James Ingram, which became a hit single in 1983. It was one of three songs with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman that were nominated that year for an Academy Award for Best Song (though the award went to “Up Where We Belong” from the movie An Officer and a Gentleman). The song has become a popular standard and has had many fine recordings, including those by Frank Sinatra (who encouraged Bennett to sing this song), Frankie Laine, Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett, Tony Bennett and George Michael and, most recently, Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin.

About This Version

We feature Tony Bennett’s 1986 solo version of “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?” from The Art of Excellence, one of Bennett’s finest albums. It was arranged by Jorge Calandrelli.

Mr. Bennett sang this song at the first live concert of his I ever attended and I’ll never forget how much the song moved me that evening in Seattle. The Bergmans have never written a bad lyric and this is one of their very best.

About Today

Today is video Saturday and I am quite pleased to present the wonderful duet of today’s song from Tony and Aretha Franklin from Duets II. Keep an eye on Tony at the very end of the song. It makes me cry too.

Song of the Day: Cold, Cold Heart

The song of the day for Sunday, September 13, 2015 is “Cold, Cold Heart.”

About This Song

The great country and western singer Hank Williams wrote “Cold, Cold Heart” in 1951. It is the classic song of love spurned is said to have its origins in an encounter that Williams had with his wife Audrey. Their marriage was in trouble, mostly because both of them were engaged in extramarital affairs. Audrey had become pregnant and had an abortion without informing Hank first. She wound up in the hospital with an infection and Hank came to visit her. It seems that he tried to kiss Audrey, but she refused to kiss him and called him “a sorry son of a bitch.” Hank later related to the governess of their children that Audrey had “a cold, cold heart.” And out of this terribly painful point in his marriage came one of his greatest songs.

About These Versions

“Cold, Cold Heart” was one of Tony Bennett’s first great hits and he has recorded it several times since. He frequently sings it in concerts. As it’s Sunday, we’re presenting several different recordings of our song. Your author finds it very interesting to listen to Mr. Bennett work with the same song at different points in his career.

1951

His first, and most famous recording was recording was made on May 31, 1951 and was arranged by Percy Faith.

1970

This version of “Cold, Cold Heart” is a favorite of mine. It’s just Tony and pianist John Bunch. In addition to it being a touching and quite effective arrangement of the song, Bennett also tells the story he so often tells in concert about Mitch Miller and this song. In concert, Bennett often tells the audience that he wasn’t sure about recording the song, but Mitch telling him that he had to do it, even if Mitch had to tie him to a tree. After a couple of beats, Bennett jokes “so he tied me to a tree and we made the recording.”
