The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: White Christmas

Today is the ninth day of The Twelve Days of a Tony Bennett Christmas.
The song of the day for Thursday, December 22, 2016 is “White Christmas.”

About This Song

“White Christmas,” written by Irving Berlin in 1940, is one of America’s most beloved Christmas songs. In the not-often heard verse of the song, we hear that “the sun is shining, the grass is green, the orange and palm trees sway, there’s never been such a day in Beverly Hills, L.A. But it’s December the 24 …” And indeed, Irving Berlin was in Los Angeles when he wrote “White Christmas,” expressing that longing for a traditional back-home Christmas. Bing Crosby recorded the song in 1942 and completely dominated the music charts for weeks. Crosby’s single of “White Christmas” is the biggest-selling single record of all time, worldwide, at over 100-million copies.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this version of “White Christmas” in 1987 for his album of Irving Berlin songs: Bennett/Berlin. The tenor saxophone is from the great Dexter Gordon.

Song of the Day: White Christmas

The song of the day for Saturday, Mary 14, 2016 is “White Christmas.”

About This Song

“White Christmas” is one of America’s most beloved Christmas songs. In the not-often heard verse of the song, we hear that “the sun is shining, the grass is green, the orange and palm trees sway, there’s never been such a day in Beverly Hills, L.A. But it’s December the 24 …” And indeed, Irving Berlin was in Los Angeles when he wrote “White Christmas” in 1940, expressing that longing for a traditional back-home Christmas. Bing Crosby recorded the song in 1941 and completely dominated the music charts for weeks. Crosby’s single of “White Christmas” is the biggest-selling single record of all time, worldwide, at over 100-million copies.

About This Version

I adore this version of “White Christmas” from Bennett/Berlin, recorded in 1987. The song features the great Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone, along with the Ralph Sharon Trio, with Paul Langosch on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. This is one of the finest jazz recordings of a holiday song that I’ve ever heard.

About Today

It was 90 degrees when I was driving home today and then and there I decided that today was the day to feature “White Christmas,” as no tribute to the music of Irving Berlin would be complete without acknowledging this song.

There is a lovely video of “White Christmas” featuring Tony, Dexter Gordon, and the Ralph Sharon Trio, stopping in an inn on a snowy Christmas Eve and singing this song. Alas, it seems to have disappeared off the Internet. Instead, here’s Tony Bennett singing it live at Rockefeller Center in 2011. May all your Christmases be bright.

Song of the Day: But Beautiful

The song of the day for Saturday, November 22, 2014 is “But Beautiful.”

About This Song

Written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke, “But Beautiful” was written for Bing Crosby to sing in the 1947 movie The Road to Rio. The song has been widely recorded, including recordings by Bill Evans, Johnny Hartman, Billie Holiday, Gregory Porter, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett and Bill Evans.

About This Version

Today’s version the duet with Lady Gaga from the recently released album Cheek To Cheek. Even though I am devoted to the recording Bennett made with Bill Evans, this one is also quite excellent; I love hearing the perspective of the singer change over the intervening years. Lady Gaga is damned swell too. It’s definitely one of my favorites from their album.

About Today

If today is Saturday, there must be a video. Here’s the video that Tony and Lady Gaga made for today’s song.

Song of the Day: I’ll Be Home For Christmas

On the seventh day of a Tony Bennett Christmas, Friday, December 20, 2013, the song of the day is “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.”

About This Song

“I’ll Be Home For Christmas” was written in 1943 by Kim Gannon and Buck Ram. This song, released at the height of World War II, tells the story of a soldier stationed overseas, who yearns to be home with family for Christmas, if only in my dreams. Bing Crosby recorded this song in 1943 and it was a best seller. The War Department issued a V-Disc with Crosby’s versions of this song and “White Christmas” that was sent to soldiers stationed all over the world. One wonders if the young soldier Anthony Benedetto, who was stationed in Germany, might have listened to this V-Disc at some point.

Song of the Day: But Beautiful

The song of the day for Thursday, October 10, 2013 is “But Beautiful.”

About This Song

“But Beautiful” was written in 1947 by Jimmy Van Heusen, with lyrics by Johnny Burke. The song was written for the movie Road To Rio, where it was introduced by Bing Crosby. The song is a close to the perfect ballad as songs can get.

Bennett’s recording that we feature today is one of the very best. Other significant recordings in addition to Bennett and Crosby include Nat King Cole, Carmen McRae and Frank Sinatra. Gregory Porter (whom I had the great pleasure of hearing this year at the 56th Monterey Jazz Festival)recorded it for his 2010 album Water.

About This Version

Your author has her weaknesses when it comes to Tony Bennett songs. Rodgers and Hart, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen and “Rules of the Road” are featured here often. At the top of the list, though, are the two albums that Tony Bennett made with Bill Evans.

Today’s song is from their first album, The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album, released in 1975. I love each and every note on this album, but today’s song, “But Beautiful,” is quite special to me. I had the honor of hearing Bennett sing this song in concert last June; it was wonderful. As is this recording, which I hope you enjoy.
