The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Old Devil Moon

The song of the day for Sunday, July 19, 2015 is “Old Devil Moon.”

About This Song

“Old Devil Moon” was written for the 1947 musical Finian’s Rainbow, with music by Burton Lane and lyrics from Yip Harburg. Also from this musical is the song “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?” While Alec Wilder was no fan of “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?”, in America Popular Song he praises “Old Devil Moon” as “a well-written, wholly convincing song. It drives, and its initial intensity is sustained throughout.”

About This Version

Today’s version is Bennett’s second recording of “Old Devil Moon.” He recorded for his first album, Cloud 7, in 1954. Today’s version is from 1964 for the album Tony Makes It Happen!. I love the opening of this song, with the glissando of strings; Rainbow is, after all, a musical filled with magic. While the strings continue to remind us of its ethereal quality, this is a superb big band arrangement.

I think my favorite part comes about 1:20 into the recording, where Bennett holds the note as he sings ‘love’ for what seems like forever, while the brass climbs up the scale. It’s really fantastic!

About This Week

This week, The Year of Tony Bennett honors a friend of this blog: Marion Evans. During the week, we will feature recordings by this gifted arranger.

Evans arranged and conducted all the songs on Bennett’s 1967 album Tony Makes It Happen! and continues to arrange for him today.

Song of the Day: Over The Rainbow

The song of the day for Wednesday, April 8, 2015 is “Over The Rainbow.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Over The Rainbow” was written in 1930 by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg for The Wizard Of Oz. Interestingly, the producers wanted to cut the song from the film, as they felt it slowed downed the movie. Thankfully, the preview audiences preferred the movie with the song. “Over The Rainbow” ranked as the #1 song of the 20th century per the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment of the Arts. The song has always been closely associated with Judy Garland. In a letter to Harold Arlen, Judy Garland wrote that the song “…has become part of my life. It’s so symbolic of everybody’s dreams and wishes that I’m sure that’s why some people get tears in their eyes when they hear it. I’ve sung it thousands of times and it’s still the song that’s closest to my heart.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett has recorded this song twice: first for his 1960 album of Harold Arlen music (Tony Bennett Sings A String of Harold Arlen) and again in 1995 for Here’s To The Ladies, where we find the version we’re featuring today.

About Today

yip_harburg-3

Today we celebrate the lyricist of today’s song: Yip Harburg. He was born on April 8, 1898 in New York; his birth name was Isidore Hochberg and he came to known as Edgar Yipsel Harburg. He and Ira Gershwin were classmates in high school and became lifelong friends. Harburg graduated from City College in 1921, married with two children. He owned an electrical appliance company, all the while writing in his spare time. After his business went bankrupt in 1929, he and Ira decided it was time for Harburg to turn to lyric writing. His first major hit song came in 1932 with “Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?”

He was offered a contract with Paramount in Hollywood, and joined the songwriters exodus, where he worked with Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Jerome Kern and Jule Styne, among others. His collaboration with Arlen on The Wizard of Oz was a major success, resulting in an Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song for “Over The Rainbow.”

He continued his work on Broadway for productions such as Bloomer Girl (with Arlen) and Finian’s Rainbow (with Burton Lane). Though he was never a member of the Communist Party, Harburg was blacklisted in Hollywood from 1950 until 1962. He died from a heart attack in 1981.

In addition to his Oscar for “Over The Rainbow,” he also won another Oscar, also with Harold Arlen, for Cabin in the Sky and for the song “Can’t Help Singing” with Jerome Kern. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.

I’ve shared this video before, but it is so lovely that I present it to you again. Happy Birthday, Yip.

Song of the Day: Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe

The song of the day for Wednesday, March 18, 2015 is “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe.”

About This Song

“Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe” was written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg for the 1940 Broadway musical Cabin in the Sky, starring Ethel Waters and Dooley Wilson. The song was introduced by Ethel Waters, sung to her husband Joe, played by Dooley Wilson. The 1943 film version of Cabin in the Sky also featured Miss Waters, with the role of Joe played by Eddie Anderson.

About This Version

With today’s song, we return to our album of the month Tony Sings For Two. “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe” is the 9th song on the album. Ralph Sharon’s bluesy introduction to the song is quite effective and Tony Bennett is obviously having a great time with the song. I’ve listened to a lot of Tony Bennett music and you can often hear his joy in singing the song–this is one of those times.

The song of the day for Tuesday, March 17, 2015 is “Old Devil Moon.”

About This Song

“Old Devil Moon” was written by Burton Lane and Yip Harburg for the 1947 musical Finian’s Rainbow, which also gave us “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?” While Alec Wilder was no fan of “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?”, in America Popular Song, he praises “Old Devil Moon” as “a well-written, wholly convincing song. As today is St. Patrick’s Day, it is only fitting that we feature a song from that most Irish of musicals, Finians’ Rainbow, which is mostly about pots of gold at the end of the rainbow and leprechauns.

About This Version

Tony Bennett has recorded this song several times; in fact, we featured his first recording in January as part of the album of the month study of Cloud 7. Today’s version is from 1967; it was arranged and conducted by Marion Evans and was included on Tony Makes It Happen!

Because I’m still feeling a bit guilty for missing Saturday’s song and YouTube video, here’s Tony singing today’s song from his 1994 MTV Unplugged concert. Enjoy! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe” on his legendary (well, legendary to me) album Tony Sings For Two. Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon went to the studio with a lot of sheet music and chose, arranged and recorded 19 songs at a single session! The results were an extraordinary album.
