“Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” was written in 1940 by Duke Ellington; the lyrics by Bob Russell followed later. Originally written as an instrumental, Ellington named the song “Never No Lament.” Bob Russell’s lyrics came in 1942 and the song’s title was changed to the current “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.” The somewhat sad lyric of the jilted lover who would just rather stay home bumps up against the very cheerful tune.

The song of the day for Saturday, December 28, 2019, is “On the Sunny Side of the Street.”

About This Song

“On The Sunny Side of the Street,” written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields in 1930, was introduced in Lew Leslie’s International Revue. The song was one of the first in a series of cheerful songs to try to cheer people up over the Great Depression. It has proven popular with singers, who love the wonderful Fields lyrics, and jazz players, who love McHugh’s swingy tune.

Tony Bennett recorded “On the Sunny Side of the Street” in January 1967 for the album Tony Makes It Happen!. Marion Evans wrote the superb arrangement for the entire album, including this song.

The playlist for the week of October 6, 2019, is Tony Likes a Jimmy Van Heusen Song.

Jimmy Van Heusen was one of the great songwriters in mid-20th-century popular film music. He wrote many songs that are well-known and popular to this day. He is also the person who wrote the song that was my absolute favorite song when I was five years old: “Swinging on a Star.” I was told, as an adult, that I drove my parents crazy by constantly singing, loudly, phrases from this song. “Or would you rather be a pig?” Or a mule or a fish. Well, you get the idea.

It’s been widely recorded, including those by Tony Bennett, Glenn Miller, Margaret Whiting, and Michael Feinstein.
