Song of the Day: Swinging on a Star

The song of the day for Sunday, March 30, 2014 is “Swinging on a Star.”

About This Song

“Swinging on a Star” was written in 1944 by the songwriting team of Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke. It was written for the movie Going My Way, starring Bing Crosby and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for that year. Crosby recorded a very successful version of the song in 1944. Other recordings include those by Rosemary Clooney, Burl Ives, and Ruby Braff, among many others.

This song is a favorite of your opinionated author, who remembers hearing the song in the family kitchen while her mother making dinner when your author was only three years old. I remember laughing every time I heard the song. I also remember my mother would sometimes turn to me and sing just “or would you rather be a fish” and I would laugh again.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this song for his 1998 album The Playground, a collection of songs for the entire family. It’s a charming album with many great songs and features duets with Elmo and Kermit The Frog. Of course, this is quite timely, as Mr. Bennett has a cameo in the latest Muppets movie, Muppets Most Wanted.

About This Song

The jazz instrumental Dat Dere was written in 1960 by Bobby Timmons; it was first played by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1960, with Timmons on piano. Oscar Brown, Jr. wrote lyrics for the tune in 1961 for his album Sin & Soul … and Then Some. The song has been recorded by jazz and popular singers including Mel Tormé and Rickie Lee Jones.

About This Version

With the lyrics that focus on a child’s trip to the zoo and the thoughts of the parents about that child’s future, “Dat Dere” is a perfect choice for Bennett’s album for children, The Playground. It’s a charming album for children of all ages. It also feature Bennett’s lovely “My Mom,” a song that his father used to sing to his children: Tony, John and Mary.

The Song of the Day for August 19,2012 is When You Wish Upon a Star. It’s a downright perfect song for Sunday.

About When You Wish Upon a Star

When You Wish Upon a Star was written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for 1940 Disney film Pinocchio. It was originally recorded by Cliff Edwards, as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. It’s also a popular jazz standard, recorded by Louis Armstrong, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Joe Pass and others.

About This Version

I personally love this album and recommend it to children of all ages. There is nothing sunnier and happier to listen to when you have the blues.
