Song of the Day: Make Believe

The song of the day for Monday, January 17, 2016 is “Make Believe.”

About This Song

“Make Believe” was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for their 1927 score for Show Boat. It’s a really lovely song. The anti-hero, Gaylord Ravenal, sings it to the young and smitten Magnolia Hawks when they first meet in Act One. In Act Two, as the marriage has completely fallen apart, Ravenal sings it to his young daughter just before he deserts the family.

The song found its way into the American songbook and has been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford and Barbra Streisand, among others.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap recorded “Make Believe” for their 2015 album The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern.

Remembering Jerome Kern

Jerome Kern was born on this day, January 27, in 1885 in New York City. He died in New York on November 11, 1945.

Kern stands as one of the most important American composers of stage and film music. His memorable songs include “Long Ago (And Far Away,” “The Last Time I Saw Paris,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and our featured song, as recorded by Tony Bennett, “All The Things You Are.”

Show Boat, written in 1927 with Oscar Hammerstein II, is perhaps his most important and long-lasting work. The score is memorable, with great songs including “Ol’ Man River,” “Bill,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man.” From an historical standpoint, Show Boat is one of the earliest examples of the so-called “integrated” musicals, where the songs serve to advance the plot.

In 1935, when musical films became more popular, Kern relocated to Hollywood. Some of his film work included music for Music in the Air, I Dream Too Much, Roberta and Swing Time. Swing Time, starring Fred Astaire, included the song “The Way You Look Tonight,” which won the Academy Award for best song.

Kern and Hammerstein also wrote the song that we are featuring today: “All The Things You Are,” from the 1939 Very Warm For May. Bennett’s recording is from his 1962 Carnegie Hall concert.

Song of the Day: Nobody Else But Me

The song of the day for Monday, March 20, 2013 is Nobody Else But Me.

About This Song

Nobody Else But Me was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1946 revival of Show Boat; it did not appear in the original 1927 production.

The song quickly became a jazz standard; the recording by Joe Pass on guitar was one of the early significant early recordings.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded Nobody Else But Me for his 1964 album with the Ralph Sharon Trio, When Lights Are Low. This is one of favorite of Bennett’s albums from the 1960s; Bennett singing with just the Trio (Ralph Sharon, Hal Gaylord and Billy Exiner) was, and is, a real treat for this author.
