The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Tony Bennett’s mother — in his own words

Tony Bennett wrote movingly about his mother in his book Just Getting Started, co-written with Scott Simon.

My mother taught me the most important lesson of my life: quality lasts.

My mother, Anna Suraci Benedetto, sewed dresses. She worked in a factory by day and brought home dresses at night because she was paid by the piece and had to support my brother, my sister, and me. My father had died when I was ten. Every night, we’d meet my mother at the Ditmars Boulevard el train stop, the north terminal of the lines from Queens, when she returned from Manhattan and help her carry home a big bundle of unsewn dresses. We’d climb the stairs, and she’d start to sew as soon as she got home. She’d stop to make us dinner, and after that, while we kids read or listened to music, she would bend over her sewing machine again to continue stitching dresses.

Sometimes she’d get her thumb caught under the sewing needle. She’d cry out in pain but put on a bandage and go back to work. She couldn’t afford to stop. Watching her made me vow, in my heart, to be so good at something I loved that my mother wouldn’t have to work again.

I sat next to my mother as she worked, just to be near her, and every now and then she’d pick up a new dress to be sewn, feel the cloth between her fingers, and set it aside with a frown.

She’d say, “I only work on quality dresses.”

Just Getting Started is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other booksellers.

CBS Sunday Morning tribute to Tony Bennett

This wonderful tribute aired on CBS Sunday Morning, with Mo Rocca and Scott Simng (who co-wrote Bennett’s 2016 book Just Getting Started).

One story about that night in Hot Springs Arkansas in 1961. A young high school student and saxophone player from Arkansas named Bill Clinton loved Tony Bennett, but was too young to be able to attend performance, so he stayed outside and listened to the show through a slightly open window.

Available for Pre-Order: Just Getting Started

If there is any kind of post that I love to write, it’s when I get to announce a pre-order for something from Tony Bennett.

Today, I’m happy to let everyone know that Tony’s new book, Just Getting Started, is now available for pre-order at online booksellers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Working with Tony on this book is NPR’s Scott Simon, who hosts Weekend Edition Saturday. It’s obvious to this listener that he loves Tony Bennett as much as we do and I think he’s an excellent choice of a collaborator. He did a lovely interview with Tony and Bill Charlap last October for the release of The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern. You can listen to that interview here. It’s also being released as an audiobook–I’ll provide more information on that as soon as I learn more.

For those of you who live in the New York area, Mr. Bennett will be signing copies of his book at The Bookmark Shoppe in Brooklyn. Click here for more information.

Tony on NPR This Saturday

Tony Bennett will be interviewed by Scott Simon on Saturday’s Weekend Edition. That’s this Saturday, October 10, 2015. NPR will be posting the interview on their site that day; I’ll touch back here and add the URL. Scott adores Tony and I think it will be a great interview.

Tony Bennett on National Public Radio

I think NPR loves Tony Bennett, as they have archived a treasure trove of interviews.  Here are some of my favorites.

This story by Scott Simon, Tony Bennett’s Art of Intimacy, was played on NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday on November 4, 2011 is a favorite of mine. It’s an extended interview that covers his vocal training right after the war, how he addresses singing at the age of 85, and some special words about the people he collaborated  with in Duets II. Good interview, nice clips from the album, and very nicely produced. Click here to listen.

In the same  time period, Tony visited the NPR studios and sang two songs, accompanied by Lee Musiker. Click here to view this small concert.

And an extended interview on World Cafe, also from Fall 2011. The discussion about the end about Tony’s relationship to painting and singing are well worth listening to.  Click here to listen.

He has appeared on Marian McPartland’s wonderful Piano Jazz show. Click here to listen. This show was  recorded in 2004.

And finally, an interesting story about creating a new arrangement of I Left My Heart in San Francisco with Bill Charlap in 2006. Click here to listen.

There’s more on NPR … Just navigate to www.npr.org and search for Tony Bennett. You wont’ be sorry!
