The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Some Other Time

The song of the day for Thursday, December 30, 2021, is “Some Other Time.”

About This Song

“Some Other Time” was written by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, for the 1944 musical On The Town, the story of three sailors on leave in New York City and their romantic adventures. This song is sung at the end by two of the couples. Inexplicably, this beautiful song was cut from the 1949 film version.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Some Other Time” in 1975 for their first album, The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album. This song had been in Evans’s repertoire since at least 1961 and appeared on several of his albums.

I plead guilty to playing this recording often. I think it’s the most perfect recording I’ve ever heard.

“Some Other Times,” as well as The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album is available on Apple Music.

I have a couple of other versions of today’s song. First is Bill Evans from The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, from 1961. He plays with his trio, with Paul Motian on drums and Scott LaFaro on bass. Tragically, LaFaro died in an automobile accident just a few weeks after the Village Vanguard. He was only 25, but in spite of his short career, he is ranked number 16 on Bass Player’s magazine of the top 100 bassists. Evans was consumed with grief after LaFaro’s death and stopped performing for several months.

I also have a lovely version of “Some Other Time” from a 1960 studio recording of On The Town.

Song of the Day: Waltz for Debby

The song of the day for Saturday, December 30, 2017 is “Waltz for Debby.”

About This Song

Bill Evans composed this song in 1956, soon after leaving the armed services. He wrote it for his young niece, Debby, the daughter of his brother Harold. With the lyrics by Gene Lees, “Waltz For Debby” became a standard for jazz and popular singers.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Waltz for Debby” in 1975 for their first album: The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album. Bennett had previously recorded the song in 1964 for the album Who Can I Turn To.

” Waltz for Debby,” as well as The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album, is available from iTunes.

About Today

For our video today, I have the Bill Evans Trio, featuring Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums, playing “Waltz for Debby.” The recording was most from 1960 or the first half of 1961. Scott LaFaro died in an automobile accident in July 1961; his death was a true blow for Evans, who stopped performing for several months afterwards.

It’s a long weekend, so if you do have some time to listen, I strong recommend the Trio’s live album from their appearance at the Village Vanguard, recorded less than two weeks before LaFaro died. My highlights include “Alice in Wonderland,” (especially the second take) “Some Other Time” and, of course, “Waltz for Debby.”

Song of the Day: My Foolish Heart

The song of the day for Tuesday, September 30, 2014 is “My Foolish Heart.”

About This Song

“My Foolish Heart” was composed in 1949 by Victor Young with lyrics by Ned Washington. This song was written for a widely-panned film of the same name, based on a J.D. Salinger short story. Time magazine excoriated the score: “nothing offsets the blight of such tear-splashed excesses as the bloop-bleep-bloop of a sentimental ballad on the soundtrack.” The song went on to be a great standard. On the other hand, J.D. Salinger would never even consider allowing any films of any of his work after the experience.

About This Version

Today’s version is from the brilliant 1975 The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album, the first of their two albums. In lesser hands, one can imagine that this song could turn into the sentimental mush described by Time Magazine; indeed, your author remembers reading about a club owner in the 1950s who would not permit any singer to perform “My Foolish Heart” at all. In the hands of these two masters, however, the song is strong, focused and meaningful. Bill Evans’ version from the legendary Village Vanguard sessions in 1961, with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums, is well worth listening to.
