The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: I Wanna Be Around

The song of the day for Tuesday, January 21, 2014 is “I Wanna Be Around.”

About This Song

The story of “I Wanna Be Around” is legendary in the music business. Sadie Vimmerstedt, who lived in Youngstown, Ohio, was a big fan of Johnny Mercer’s music. She wrote the opening line ‘I want to be around to pick up the pieces, when somebody breaks yours heart’ and felt it sounded like a Johnny Mercer song. She mailed a letter to ‘Johnny Mercer, Songwriter, New York.’ The post office forwarded the letter to ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), who got the letter to Mercer.
Mercer wrote the melody himself and completed the lyrics for “I Wanna Be Around” in 1959 and asked Tony Bennett to record it, which he did in 1962. Mercer gave 50% of the profits to Ms. Vimmerstedt, which made her a wealthy woman and enabled her to retire and travel the world. Tony Bennett recounts in his autobiography The Good Life that she sent him postcards from her travels.

It is one of the great songs in the American Songbook.

About This Version

I can hear you now … she’s been playing a lot of Johnny Mercer lately; it’s true–I have been. Mercer, Arlen, Rodgers and Hart, and “The Rules of the Road” are all on the list of songs and songwriters that I just cannot resist.

Today’s version of “I Wanna Be Around” is the original. Tony Bennett recorded this version in 1962; it was released as a single in 1962 and featured for his 1963 album of the same name. This album also contains another of his great hits: “The Good Life” (stayed tuned; this song is coming up soon). It was arranged and conducted by Marty Manning and was produced by Ernie Altschuler.

Songs of the Day: The Good Life / I Wanna Be Around

The song of the day for Friday, October 25, 2013 is a medley of “The Good Life” and “I Wanna Be Around.”

About These Songs

These are two of Tony Bennett’s most popular songs, both of which originally appeared on Bennett’s 1964 album I Wanna Be Around.

“The Good Life” (“La Belle Vie” in the original French) was written in 1962 by Sacha Distel with lyrics by Jack Reardon. The song originally appeared in the 1963 film Seven Capital Sins.

“I Wanna Be Around” was written 1959 by Johnny Mercer and Sadie Vimmerstedt. Ms. Vimmerstedt, who lived in Youngstown, Ohio, was a big fan of Johnny Mercer. One day she was inspired to write the line “I want to be around to pick up the pieces, when somebody breaks your heart.” She thought it sounded like a Johnny Mercer song, and so she mailed the lyrics to him (Johnny Mercer, Songwriter, New York, NY). The post office forwarded the letter to ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), who gave it to Mercer. Mercer must have agreed with Sadie, as he not only completed the lyric but composed the tune as well. Mercer gave Ms. Vimmerstedt a healthy portion of the royalties, which made Ms. Vimmerstedt a very well-to-do woman.

About This Version

Because Tony Bennett is performing with the quartet tonight (Casino Rama Entertainment Centre in Rama, Ontario, Canada), we thought it would be nice to feature a recording of a live performance. Tonight’s medley is from Tony Bennett’s Grammy-winning album MTV Unplugged from 1994. Bennett, playing with the Ralph Sharon Trio, gave a great concert live on television and won over a whole new generation of fans in one night. This concert also marks the first time Bennett performed with k.d. lang; a few years later they did an album of songs made famous by Louis Armstrong, A Wonderful World. They have been recording together since then.

Song of the Day: I Wanna Be Around

The Song of the Day for April 19, 2013 is I Wanna Be Around.

About I Wanna Be Around

The story behind this song is legendary. A woman from Ohio named Sadie Vimmerstedt was a fan of Johnny Mercer. She came up with the first two lines of the song and thought they sounded like a Mercer lyric. She famously mailed a letter with those two lines to “Johnny Mercer, Songwriter, Los Angeles, California.”

Mercer agreed, and went on to write the melody and remaining lyrics for I Wanna Be Around. He asked Tony Bennett to record the song, which Bennett did in October, 1962. It was the foundation for his 1963 album of the same name.

Johnny Mercer gave 50 percent of the royalties from the song to Ms. Vimmerstedt, which allowed her to retire and travel the world.

Song of the Day: I Wanna Be Around

The Song of the Day for Monday, November 19, 2012 is I Wanna Be Around.

About I Wanna Be Around

As part of Johnny Mercer week, we feature I Wanna Be Around as the song of the day. This is one of my favorite Johnny Mercer songs and has been for many years. It’s also one of the few songs that Mercer wrote the music for, with lyrics suggested by one his fans, Sadie Vimmerstedt.  The song was released in 1959.

This song has been sung by many fine artists, including Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, James Brown and Lena Horne. But I believe that Tony Bennett has owned this song from the day he first recorded it.  Johnny Mercer stated that Tony Bennett’s recording of I Wanna Be Around was his favorite interpretation of any song he ever wrote; not just this song, but of all the songs he ever wrote. It doesn’t get much better than that. The perfect song from my very favorite singer and one of my most favorite songwriters. It’s hard to beat.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this version of I Wanna Be Around in October, 1962; it was released on Bennett’s 1963 album, I Wanna Be Around.  It was arranged and conducted by Marty Manning and was produced by Ernie Altschuler. Mr. Bennett sings this song  frequently in his concerts. It’s a personal favorite of this author.
