Song of the Day: Just One of Those Things

The song of the day for Friday, July 20, 2018 is “Just One of Those Things.”

About This Song

Cole Porter wrote “Just One of Those Things” for the 1935 musical Jubilee. It’s one of Porter’s most popular songs and has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Alec Wilder in American Popular Song spoke of the lyric as ‘a trip to the moon on gossamer wings’ and “that it seems impossible that it wasn’t sitting on his piano, waiting for Porter even before he wrote the lyric.” It has a certain literary fame as well: Holden Caulfied, in J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye likes the song and notes that even the “stinking band” in the hotel lounge “couldn’t ruin it entirely.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Just One of Those Things” in 1957 for his album The Beat of My Heart. The arrangement was done by Ralph Sharon.

For this album, Bennett gathered world-class drummers and percussionists to participate in the album. Today’s recording featured a spectacular band, including Art Blakey (drums), Milt Hinton (bass), Al Cohn (tenor saxophone) and Nat Adderly (trumpet). It’s a great recording of a great song.

Song of the Day: East of the Sun

The song of the day for Thursday, July 19. 2018 is “East of the Sun (and West of the Moon).”

About This Song

Bruce Bowman wrote “East of the Sun” in 1934 while a student at Princeton University for a student musical production called Stags at Bay, produced by the Princeton Triangle Club. The song had great reception and was noted by Princeton alumnus F. Scott Fitzgerald. After his graduation from college in 1936, he worked briefly in Hollywood for the film industry, but decided to return to the East Coast. He was about to start a contract with a New York music publisher when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1937.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)” in 1992 for his album Perfectly Frank, an album of songs sung by Frank Sinatra. Ralph Sharon did the arrangement.

Song of the Day: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered

The song of the day for Sunday, July 15, 2018 is “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”

About This Song

“Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, was one of the hit songs from the 1940 musical Pal Joey, where it was introduced by Vivienne Segal. Notable recordings are by Benny Goodman, Mel Tormé, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Alec Wilder admired the lyric and the verse, but found the song “notey.” In spite of being notey, it’s a cornerstone of the American Songbook.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” in 1959 with Ralph Sharon for their extraordinary album Tony Sings For Two. Why extraordinary? I see Tony Sings For Two was declaration of independence from the heavy hand of producer Mitch Miller who seems to have had a weakness for novelty and pop songs. This album was the artist breaking free: recording the songs he wanted to record (and what a great selection of songs the album has) and with the sound he wanted (just the elegant Ralph Sharon on piano).

Tony Bennett describes it in his autobiography, The Good Life:

I always wanted to be unpredictable, and so for my next project, I decided to go in the opposite direction from the big orchestral albums I’d been doing lately and cut an intimate piano-vocal album with Ralph Sharon. We booked time in the studio and pored through music books, trying one tune after another. The arrangements were spontaneous, and we finished each song in one or two takes. In one afternoon we laid down sixteen tunes–which must be some kind of record–twelve of which made it onto the album, which became 1961’s Tony Sings for Two. Mitch Miller showed up at the start of these sessions, furious that I was really going through with it. When he saw that there was no dissuading me, he turned to Frank Laico and said, “I’m leaving. I can’t support this.” Tony Sings for Two turned out to be one of my finest records ever.

About Today

Tony Bennett is well-known for his volunteerism and charitable contributions. He is well-known for his appearances at fund raisers. Today we have a video from a televised Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon. I’m not sure of the date, but my guess it’s from the late 1970s or early 1980s.
