About This Song

This song is, of course, the title song for the 1937 Astaire and Rogers film Shall We Dance, released in 1937. Other great songs from this score include “They Can’t Take Away From Me” and “Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off.”

Song of the Day: I Got Rhythm

The song of the day for Saturday, September 26, 2020, is “I Got Rhythm.”

About Today

Today marks the birthday of George Gershwin, who was born on September 26, 1898.

About This Song

“I Got Rhythm” was written by George and Ira Gershwin in 1928. Gershwin originally wrote this song with a slow tempo for the 1928 musical Treasure Girl. In 1930 for Girl Crazy, he decided on a faster rhythm. The song was introduced by Ethel Merman and became wildly popular based on her performance. It has been recorded many times by artists including Miss Merman, Fred Astaire, John Pizzarelli, and Ethel Waters. It’s one of the great jazz standards.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “I Got Rhythm” for his 1995 album Here’s To The Ladies, which featured songs made famous by great women singers on the 20th century. This song is, of course, associated with Ethel Merman. Bennett and Ralph Sharon did the arrangements for the entire album.

“I Got Rhythm,” as well as Here’s To The Ladies, is available from Apple Music.

While you’re here, I hope you’ll take a moment to listen to Ethel Merman’s recording from Girl Crazy. She sure had a set of pipes!

Song of the Day: The Man That Got Away

The song of the day for Thursday, September 17, 2020, is “The Man That Got Away.”

About Today

Today we are celebrating Ralph Sharon, on the anniversary of his birth on September 17, 1923. Sharon was born in London and emigrated to the United States in 1954. He served as Tony Bennett’s pianist and musical director for many years.

About This Song

“The Man That Got Away” was written by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin for Judy Garland to sing in the 1954 film A Star Is Born. Her performance of the song is legendary in film history, with 27 takes in three days, three separate sessions, and two different directors. The filmed scene is brilliant and made the song a huge hit for Garland, who sang it in most of her concerts.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon recorded “The Man That Got Away” in 1959. They booked the studio for the day. Sharon brought a briefcase of sheet music and they leafed through the music, picked songs that they liked, and recorded them in one or two takes. The result was the album Tony Sings For Two, released in 1961.

“The Man That Got Away,” as well as Tony Sings For Two, is available from Apple Music.

About This Song
