Song of the Day: Nobody’s Heart Belongs To Me

The song of the day for Thursday, September 7, 2017 is “Nobody’s Heart Belongs To Me.”

About This Song

“Nobody’s Heart Belongs To Me” was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart for the musical By Jupiter in 1942. Directed by Joshua Logan, it starred Ray Bolger, Vera-Ellen and Constance Moore. It was their last full-length work. In American Popular Music, Alec Wilder called this song “one of the loveliest songs Rodgers or any other theater writer has ever written. In the area of this form of music it is a masterpiece.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon recorded “Nobody’s Heart Belongs To Me” on October 28, 1959 for the album Tony Sings For Two. It’s one of the several Rodgers and Hart songs on the album and I’ll be featuring them all before the month is through.

Song of the Day: So Beats My Heart For You

The song of the day for Wednesday, September 6, 2017 is “So Beats My Heart For You.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “So Beats My Heart For You,” was written in 1930 by Fat Ballard, Charles Henderson and Tom Waring. As one of the songwriters, Tom Waring, was the brother of Fred Waring, “So Beats My Heart For You,” was featured by Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians.

And while it is not true that Fred Waring invented the Waring Blendor, he had the good sense in 1938 to invest heavily in the product and named the company that made them the Waring Corporation and named the product the Waring Blendor, substituting the “e” for an “o” to make it more distinctive. The Waring Blendor became an important tool in hospitals for the implementation of specific diets, as well as a vital scientific research device. Jonas Salk used it while developing his polio vaccine. In 1954, the millionth Waring Blendor was sold.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “So Beats My Heart For You” in 1957 for The Beat of My Heart. The song features a great arrangement from Ralph Sharon and feature percussionists Candido, Sabu and Billy Exiner.

Song of the Day: Crazy Rhythm

The song of the day for Tuesday, September 5, 2017 is “Crazy Rhythm.”

About This Song

“Crazy Rhythm” was written for the 1929 musical Here’s Howe. The music was written by Joseph Meyer and Roger Wolfe Kahn with lyrics by Irving Caesar. It’s been a popular standard since it was written and has been heavily recorded, not just by jazz and popular artists, but other genres including hillbilly. Significant recordings include those by Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Stan Getz, Bing Crosby, Bix Beiderbecke and Whispering Jack Smith.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Crazy Rhythm” in 1949 for a demo record but, alas, no copies remain. I’m very glad he decided to record it again in 1957, this time with an arrangement by Ralph Sharon, for The Beat of My Heart. This recording features drummer Chico Hamilton.

Song of the Day: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered

The song of the day for Monday, September 4, 2017 is “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.”

About This Song

“Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, was one of the hit songs from the 1940 musical Pal Joey, where it was introduced by Vivienne Segal. Notable recordings are by Benny Goodman, Mel Tormé, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Alec Wilder admired the lyric and the verse, but found the song “notey.” In spite of being notey, it’s a cornerstone of the American Songbook.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon recorded “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” in 1959 for the album Tony Sings For Two.

Song of the Day: The Man That Got Away

The song of the day for Sunday, September 3, 2017 is “The Man That Got Away.”

About This Song

“That Man That Got Away” was written by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin for Judy Garland to sing in the 1954 version of A Star Is Born, with James Mason. Her performance of this song is legendary in film history, with 27 takes in three days, three separate sessions, and two different directors. The filmed scene is brilliant and made the song a huge hit for Garland, who sang it in most of her concerts.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon recorded “The Man That Got Away” on October 28, 1959 and released in 1961 on the album Tony Sings For Two.

If you told me you were going to stick me on a desert island and I could only take two Tony Bennett albums with me, this would definitely be one of them (the other would be the 1962 Carnegie Hall concert album).

Tony Bennett tells this story in his autobiography The Good Life:

I always wanted to be unpredictable, and so for my next project, I decided to go in the opposite direction from the big orchestral albums I’d been doing lately and cut an intimate piano-vocal album with Ralph Sharon. We booked time in the studio and pored through music books, trying one tune after another. The arrangements were spontaneous, and we finished each song in one or two takes. In one afternoon we laid down sixteen tunes— which must be some kind of record— twelve of which made it onto the album, which became 1961’s Tony Sings for Two, Mitch Miller showed up at the start of these sessions, furious that I was really going through with it. When he saw that there was no dissuading me, he turned to Frank Laico and said, “I’m leaving. I can’t support this.” Tony Sings for Two turned out to be one of my finest records ever.

And today’s song is my favorite from a favorite album.
