The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

January 27, 2015 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: All The Things You Are

The song of the day for Tuesday, January 27, 2015 is “All The Things You Are.”

About This Song

“All The Things You Are” was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein for the 1939 musical Very Warm For May. In American Popular Song, Alec Wilder considers it to be one of Kern’s finest songs and with good reason. It’s a beautiful tune and Hammerstein’s lyrics are excellent.

About This Version

Tony Bennett included “All The Things You Are” in his legendary 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall. This is not only one my own personal favorites from the recording of that concert, it is one of my favorite of all the songs that Tony Bennett has recorded.

About Today

The Year of Tony Bennett is pleased to honor the music of Jerome Kern, who was born on January 27, 1885 in New York City. He showed musical talent early in his life and was taught piano by his mother, an accomplished musician. He went on to study at the New York College of Music after high school. He worked as a rehearsal pianist and also as a song plugger. He began composing additions to musicals imported from London and also for silent movies. He was one of the founding members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

He was a prolific composer for the Broadway stage in the 1910s and 1920s. In 1925, he began his long friendship and working relationship with Oscar Hammerstein II, with whom he wrote Show Boat. With the emergence of “talking pictures,” he began working in Hollywood and wrote for many musical films, including Roberta and Swing Time.

Kern died in 1945 of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 60. He was inducted posthumously into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1970.

Song of the Day: The Folks That Live on the Hill

The song of the day for Thursday, January 2, 2014 is “The Folks That Live on the Hill.”

About This Song

“The Folks That Live on the Hill” was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1937 for the movie High, Wide and Handsome, where it was introduced by Irene Dunne. Bing Crosby had a successful recording of the song, also from 1937. In later years, it became a hit for Peggy Lee, who included in on her 1957 album The Man I Love (which was conducted by Frank Sinatra).

About This Version

Today, we’re staying with Astoria: The Portrait of the Artist for the song of the day. Maybe it’s because we’ve been watching all three segments of That’s Entertainment (DVRed from Turner Classic Movies who presented them all, in order, on New Year’s Eve), but this sweet song about love and family really hits the spot for us. It’s a classic Hammerstein lyric: a little folksy on the surface but deep and rich when one takes the time to listen. Tony Bennett brings a lovely longing and intensity to this song. Like all of the songs on this album, “The Folks That Live on the Hill” was arranged and conducted by Jorge Calandrelli.

About This Version

Tony Bennett has only recorded this song once: in 1962 at his legendary concert at Carnegie Hall. Tony Bennett at Carnegie Hall is widely considered to be one of the greatest live albums ever made. “All The Things You Are” is just one example of the superb songs from this concert.

Song of the Day: Nobody Else But Me

The song of the day for Monday, March 20, 2013 is Nobody Else But Me.

About This Song

Nobody Else But Me was written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II for the 1946 revival of Show Boat; it did not appear in the original 1927 production.

The song quickly became a jazz standard; the recording by Joe Pass on guitar was one of the early significant early recordings.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded Nobody Else But Me for his 1964 album with the Ralph Sharon Trio, When Lights Are Low. This is one of favorite of Bennett’s albums from the 1960s; Bennett singing with just the Trio (Ralph Sharon, Hal Gaylord and Billy Exiner) was, and is, a real treat for this author.

Song of the Day: The Folks That Live On The Hill

The song of the day for Wednesday, May 15, 2013 is The Folks That Live On the Hill.

About This Song

While the partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II probably comes to mind when people first think of Hammerstein, Oscar Hammerstein was nearly 50 before he and Rodgers wrote Oklahoma. Prior to that, he had teamed with composers including Jerome Kern (Showboat in 1927), Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg. Not only a lyric writer, Hammerstein usually wrote the book for the musicals he collaborated on.

Today’s song, The Folks That Live On The Hill, was written in 1937 with Jerome Kern for a movie called High, Wide and Handsome, where it was introduced by Irene Dunne. It was recorded that same year by Bing Crosby. Peggy Lee also recorded the song in 1957 on her album The Man I Love.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this song on his 1990 autobiographical album Astoria: Portrait of the Artist. The song is quite touching in the context of the arc of the album: the young man returning home after World War II, exploring his past, planning his future and dreaming of what life might bring.
