The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

May 15, 2017 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: Lucky To Be Me

The song of the day for Tuesday, May 16, 2017 is “Lucky To Be Me.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Lucky To Be Me,” is another song from the 1944 musical On The Town, written by Leonard Bernstein, Adolph Green and Betty Comden. Like our recently featured “Some Other Time,” this song was also cut from the 1949 film version. While I truly enjoyed Frank Sinatra and the rest of the cast in the film, from a musical standpoint, it’s a real bust. The original score is gorgeous and is worth listening to.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Lucky To Be Me” in 1976 for their second album, Together Again, released in 1977.

Song of the Day: Some Other Time

The song of the day for Thursday, February 9, 2017 is “Some Other Time.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Some Other Time,” was written in 1944 by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden for the musical On The Town. On The Town is the story of three sailors on leave in New York City and their romantic adventures. This song is sung at the end by two of the couples. Inexplicably, this beautiful song was cut from the 1949 film version.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Some Other Time” in June 1975 for their first album The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album.

Tony Bennett’s version of this song is my favorite. Coming in second is this recording by Blossom Dearie.

About Today

The Year of Tony Bennett remembers Adolph Green on the anniversary of his birth on December 2, 1944. He and his partner Betty Comden not only wrote wonderful lyrics for the Broadway stage for composers Leonard Bernstein and Jule Styne, but also wrote screenplays for films including the great Singin’ In The Rain. Adolph, along with Betty Comden, wrote the lyrics for one of Tony Bennett’s most popular songs “Just In Time.”

I found this clip of Adolph Green and Betty Comden on Art Ford’s Greenwich Village Party from 1957. Also attending the party is Cy Coleman, who plays piano. Adolph and Betty sing a song from On The Town called “Carried Away.”

About Today

Today we recognize the 98th anniversary of the year of Betty Comden’s birth on May 3, 1917. Her partnership with Adolph Green began she only 20 and continued until his death in 2002. In addition to their lyrics for composers including Bernstein and Jule Styne, they also wrote the screenplay for Singin’ In The Rain, one of great Hollywood comedies about the introduction of the “talkies.”
