The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

August 21, 2015 By Suzanne 1 Comment

Song of the Day: Poor Little Rich Girl

The song of the day for Friday, August 21. 2015 is “Poor Little Rich Girl.”

About This Song

Noël Coward wrote “Poor Little Rich Girl” for the 1925 revue On With the Dance. It is one of his most popular songs.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Poor Little Rich Girl” with Count Basie and His Orchestra in 1959 for their first album: Basie/Bennett. The very effective arrangement is by Ralph Sharon.

About Today

Today we celebrate the birth of one of America’s great band leaders: William James Basie, who was born in Red Bank, New Jersey on August 21, 1904. He started playing piano in his youth; by the time he was a teenager, he had dropped out of school and starting his career as a jazz pianist.

He made the decision to move west to Kansas City, where he joined Bennie Moten’s band in 1929. After Moten’s death in 1936, Basie formed his own band and took it to Chicago. In that time, he worked with some of the great jazz musicians: Lester Young, Freddie Green, Buck Clayton, Jimmy Rushing and Joe Williams.

In 1937, he took his band to New York, playing in venues like the Roseland Ballroom and The Savoy. During this time, he played with Billie Holiday and other noted artists of the day.

Like most big bands after the war, Basie had to disband his large group, but continued to play in smaller combos and moved on to the new forms, like bebop, with a new group of musicians: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, among others. He gradually reformed his band, toured Europe and kept his band alive and vibrant all the way into the 1980s, including a wonderful appearance in Mel Brook’s film Blazing Saddles.

We note here that Tony Bennett’s drummer, Harold Jones, played with Count Basie from 1967 to 1972. Tony Bennett always introduces Jones as “Count Basie’s Favorite Drummer.” We have a little video of Harold Jones playing with Count Basie and His Orchestra that seems to prove that point:

Happy Birthday, Count Basie. Thanks for all the great music.

Song of the Day: Poor Little Rich Girl

The song of the day for Sunday, November 2, 2014 is “Poor Little Rich Girl.”

About This Song

“Poor Little Rich Girl” was written in 1925 by Noël Coward for the revue On With The Dance. The Noël Coward Society ranks this song as one of ten most popular songs.

About This Version

Today’s version is from one of my favorite of Bennett’s early albums: Basie/Bennett (sometimes called Basie Swings, Bennett Sings) from his first album with Count Basie and His Orchestra, released in 1959. In his autobiography The Good Life, Bennett relates:

Although I’d talked with him on the phone, I didn’t meet Count Basie until our rehearsals began. It was an amazing experience, the fulfillment of a dream, and I’ll never forget it. We hit it off right away, as though we always knew and understood each other. At one point, Basie turned to his band, pointed at me, and said, “Anything this man wants, he gets!” I was floored.

You can hear that connection in every song in this album … it sounds as if Tony Bennett had been singing with Basie for years.

Antonia Bennett’s Sail Away

I didn’t want to let anymore time pass without acknowledging the extraordinary singing by Antonia Bennett last Saturday night in Tacoma, most especially on Noël Coward’s song “Sail Away.”

I’ve always loved the score for Sail Away, but Miss Bennett’s version of this song is by far the best that I have ever heard. It was heartbreakingly beautiful and was sung perfectly.

Thank you, Miss Bennett, for making such a wonderful memories with your “Sail Away.”

Here’s Sir Coward singing his song:

Song of the Day: Poor Little Rich Girl

The Song of the Day for Sunday, November 4, 2012 is Poor Little Rich Girl.

About Poor Little Rich Girl

Poor Little Rich Girl was written by Noel Coward with Philip Braham for the 1925 musical revue, On With The Dance. It opened in Manchester, England and was soon transferred to London.  At the time, Noel Coward was not at all well-known, and barely received a mention in the reviews.

About This Version

This version was recorded by Mr. Bennett with Count Basie and His Orchestra in January 1958 for the Basie / Bennett album, released in 1959. This recording is included on From Now On, a Tony Bennett  compilation album from Europe released in September, 2012.

In this author’s opinion, the Count Basie-Tony Bennett collaboration was a brilliant next step after his two jazz albums: Cloud 7 and Beat Of My Heart. I have always respected Mr. Bennett for giving Count Basie top billing for this album as a measure of his respect for the body of work by Bill Basie. The collaboration with Count Basie further cemented Tony Bennett’s reputation as a jazz musician. This version was arranged by Ralph Sharon and it swings.
