Song of the Day: I’m Through With Love

The song of the day for Tuesday, July 30, 2019, is “I’m Through With Love.”

About This Song

“I’m Through With Love” was written in 1931 by Fud Livingston, Matty Melneck, and Gus Kahn. The song has been popular since it was written, with recordings by Nat Cole, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sarah Vaughan, among many recordings. Marilyn Monroe sang the song in the 1959 film Some Like It Hot.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Ralph Sharon recorded “I’m Through With Love” in 1959 for their album Tony Sings For Two, which was recorded with just Bennett and Sharon on piano. In spite of opposition from Mitch Miller, which likely resulted in the album not being released until 1961, Tony Sings For Two was a triumph.

Song of the Day: Goody, Goody

The song of the day for Monday, April 17, 2017 is “Goody Goody.”

About This Song

“Goody, Goody” was written in 1936, with music by Matty Malneck and lyrics by Johnny Mercer.

This swinging little song concerns a man who thinks he can get away with playing the field without his girlfriend, but she finds out and sings her sweet revenge. The song was quite popular in the 1930s, mostly due to a Benny Goodman recording with Helen Ward on vocals. Other significant recordings include those by Mabel Mercer, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Crosby and others. I suspect this recording from Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga will join the list.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga recorded “Goody, Goody” for their album Cheek To Cheek. This fun and sassy version was arranged by Marion Evans.
