The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Maybe This Time

The song of the day for Tuesday, January 10, 2023, is “Maybe This Time.”

About This Song

“Maybe This Time” was written in 1963 by John Kander and Fred Ebb and used in the film version of Cabaret, sung by Liza Minnelli. It was not written for the original Broadway production. Nor was it written especially for the film version; Kander and Ebb had written the song in 1963 for Kaye Ballard. It was therefore not eligible for consideration for an Academy Award.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Maybe This Time” in July 1995 and released that year on Here’s To The Ladies. The song is in tribute to Liza Minnelli.

Tony Bennett sang “Maybe This Time” regularly at his concerts and it was always one of the highlights of the show. If you have access to Apple Music, you can hear the full concert version of “Maybe This Time” from the iTunes Festival: London 2010 performance here.

“Maybe This Time,” as well as Here’s To The Ladies is available on Apple Music.

I also found this video from a concert on November 11, 2013:

Here’s Liza Minnelli’s recording of “Maybe This Time” from Cabaret.
