The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Cold, Cold Heart

The song of the day for Sunday, September 13, 2015 is “Cold, Cold Heart.”

About This Song

The great country and western singer Hank Williams wrote “Cold, Cold Heart” in 1951. It is the classic song of love spurned is said to have its origins in an encounter that Williams had with his wife Audrey. Their marriage was in trouble, mostly because both of them were engaged in extramarital affairs. Audrey had become pregnant and had an abortion without informing Hank first. She wound up in the hospital with an infection and Hank came to visit her. It seems that he tried to kiss Audrey, but she refused to kiss him and called him “a sorry son of a bitch.” Hank later related to the governess of their children that Audrey had “a cold, cold heart.” And out of this terribly painful point in his marriage came one of his greatest songs.

About These Versions

“Cold, Cold Heart” was one of Tony Bennett’s first great hits and he has recorded it several times since. He frequently sings it in concerts. As it’s Sunday, we’re presenting several different recordings of our song. Your author finds it very interesting to listen to Mr. Bennett work with the same song at different points in his career.

1951

His first, and most famous recording was recording was made on May 31, 1951 and was arranged by Percy Faith.

1970

This version of “Cold, Cold Heart” is a favorite of mine. It’s just Tony and pianist John Bunch. In addition to it being a touching and quite effective arrangement of the song, Bennett also tells the story he so often tells in concert about Mitch Miller and this song. In concert, Bennett often tells the audience that he wasn’t sure about recording the song, but Mitch telling him that he had to do it, even if Mitch had to tie him to a tree. After a couple of beats, Bennett jokes “so he tied me to a tree and we made the recording.”

This version is from his first duets album, Duets: An American Classic with country singer Tim McGraw. It features some lovely guitar work from Gray Sargent and an arrangement by Jorge Calandrelli. It was recorded on February 15, 2006.

Song of the Day: Cold, Cold Heart

Next up in the Tony Bennett 1950s Hit Parade is the song of the day for Tuesday, January 8, 2013: Cold, Cold Heart.

About Cold, Cold Heart

This song was written in 1951 by the great Hank Williams. Hank Williams recorded the song, on the B-side of a single, in 1951, but Cold, Cold Heart won  the country music chart’s Number One ranking.  It is the first country “cross-over” song, due to the recording made in the same year by Tony Bennett. Since 1951, this song has been a favorite of both popular and country singers including Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, Nat King Cole and Jerry Lee Lewis.

About This Version

Tony Bennett tells wonderful stories about Cold, Cold Heart in his concerts. He often relates that he liked the song when Mitch Miller played it for him, but couldn’t imagine himself singing a country song. He says that Mitch told him that if he had to tie him to a tree, Tony would record that song.  So, as Tony relates “…so he tied me to a tree … ”

They recorded the song on May 31, 1951; by July it reached the Billboard charts and stayed there for 27 weeks, peaking at #1 on the popular charts. Mr. Bennett sings the song today at most of his concerts.

The very effective arrangement is by Percy Faith.

Song of the Day: Cold, Cold Heart

In honor of Mr. Bennett’s appearance tonight in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the song of the day for Thursday, December 6, 2012, is Cold, Cold Heart, sung with Argentine superstar Vincentico on the recently released Viva Duets.

About Cold, Cold Heart

Cold, Cold Heart was written in 1951 by Hank Williams. Interestingly, it appeared on the B-side of single release, with Dear John on the A-side. In spite of being on the B-side, the song became a favorite of disk jockeys and jukebox listeners. Tony Bennett famously recorded the song in the same year, with an arrangement by Percy Faith. Cold, Cold Heart was one of the first country-western songs that crossed over into popular music, thanks to Mr. Bennett’s recording. It’s a heartbreaker of a song, which I’m sure contributes to its popularity 62 years after its release.

In fact, Google used the 1951 Tony Bennett recording of the song for its Valentine’s Day animated doodle  in 2012, shown in this video:

About This Version

For Viva Duets,  the Argentine star Vincentico sang Cold, Cold Heart with Mr. Bennett. This version features very nice guitar work from Gray Sargent.

It went on, of course, to become a very popular country and western song as well as a popular song.

About This Version

We choose Cold, Cold Heart in preparation for the Viva Duets album, on which Tony Bennett will be singing this song with Vincentico.

This version is the original, recorded in 1951. It was arranged and conducted by Percy Faith and reached #1 on the Billboard charts. It was originally released as a single, of course.
