The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

May 1, 2013 By Suzanne 1 Comment

An Arts Education Success Story

Tony Bennett is one our country’s most important spokesmen for the value of an arts education for public school students. One of his most important accomplishments is the Exploring The Arts Foundation, founded by Mr. Bennett and his wife, Susan Benedetto.  The foundation created the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, NY and now in the process of creating partner schools in Los Angeles.  You can read more about the programs in Los Angeles here. The Exploring the Arts website can be found here.

In his recent book, Life is a Gift, Mr. Bennett makes this observation:

Studies have shown that students with high arts involvement perform better in school, do more community service activities, and have higher graduation rates, so it’s very important for kids to be involved in the arts–from drama, dance, vocals and instrumental music to film and fine arts.

Over the years, we have had some of the highest graduation rates and percentages of kids going off to college–not only by New York City standards, but nationwide, with an average graduation rate of 95 percent and 85 percent going on to a four-year college.

This has recently been proven at a K-8 school in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Originally planned as an arts school, instead the instruments were locked up and the school experienced violence and problems from the beginning; by 2010 it ranked in the bottom five of all public schools in the state of Massachusetts.

And then a new principal — the sixth principal in seven years — fired all the security guards and hired arts teachers instead.

His success was remarkable: within three years the school has experienced a complete turnaround. You can read the details of this amazing transformation on the NBC News website.  The video at the end of the story is from tonight’s NBC Nightly News.

The Year of Tony Bennett supports Exploring the Arts and we hope that you will consider supporting this organization as well.

Please Support Exploring the Arts

The Year of Tony Bennett supports Exploring the Arts and hopes that you will support this organization as well. Founded by Tony Bennett and Susan Benedetto in 1999, Exploring the Arts supports arts education in public schools.  ETA recently completed construction of the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, NY, a public school for arts students.

From now until January 14, any gift you make will be matched by another donor, making your gift go even further.

I was lucky enough to receive excellent musical education as a young person. Even though I did not become a professional musician, studying music and participating in bands and orchestras has been a fundamental and important aspect of my life in many ways, not the least of which is a lifelong love of music.

Please consider making a contribution to this fine organization. You can easily contribute online at www.exploringthearts.org.

Six Month Anniversary

The Year of Tony Bennett is very pleased to celebrate its six month anniversary. The very first article was posted on June 10, 2012 at 4:22 am and was titled Welcome to The Year of Tony Bennett.

It’s been a great ride and all we can do is say thank you very much. What started out as small little WordPress site has grown beyond our wildest dreams.

In the last six months, quite a lot has been accomplished, including:

  • 11,500 page loads
  • 5,328 unique visits
  • 4,111 unique visitors
  • 300 posts
  • 180 quotes of the day
  • 120 songs of the day
  • $100 contributed to Exploring the Arts, in the name of this blog and its readers
  • And more intangible rewards than I could possibly begin to enumerate

In his recent book, Life is a Gift: The Zen of Bennett, Tony Bennett says that “If you follow your passion, you’ll never work a day in your life.” In writing this blog, I have discovered my passion and can honestly say that doing this has never felt like work.

Many thanks to each and every one of our readers. I love writing this blog and I hope you enjoy reading it.

Thanks to our Readers!

Dear Readers of The Year of Tony Bennett,

The blog just made its first contribution to Exploring the Arts, the foundation created by Tony Bennett and Susan Benedetto.  The blog will contribute to ETA each quarter in the name of The Year of Tony Bennett and its followers.

By reading and subscribing to the blog, you are helping support arts education. As school systems all over the United States are being forced to cut their budgets, arts programs are often the first programs to go. If you can, consider supporting the arts in your community.  I know that I benefited greatly from music programs when I attended public schools. I chose the clarinet and would not trade my years of playing in school bands for anything.

Thank you readers!
