The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

August 17, 2012 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: But Beautiful

As we continue our tribute to Bill Evans, the Song of the Day for August 17, 2012 is But Beautiful.

About But Beautiful

But Beautiful was written by Jimmy Van Heusen (music) and Johnny Burke (lyrics). It was released in 1947 and featured in the film Road to Rio and was sung by Bing Crosby. It immediately became a jazz standard and has been recorded by artists including Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Johnny Hartman, Billie Holiday, Shirley Horn, Freddie Hubbard, and Carmen McRae.

About This Version

Bill Evans first recorded But Beautiful on his album of the same name, as the Bill Evans Trio, which included Eddie Gomez (b)  and Marty Morell (d), and Stan Getz in August, 1974 at Jazz Middleheim in Antwerp, Belgium.  He recorded it with Tony Bennett again the next year; it was released on the Improv label on The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album.
