The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

December 27, 2014 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: Smile

The song of the day for Saturday, December 27, 2014 is “Smile.”

About This Song

Charlie Chaplin wrote “Smile” in 1936 for his last silent film, Modern Times, which shows Chaplin and his costar Paulette Goddard, walking hand-in-hand up the road as the sun rises and as this song plays, in one of the most iconic scenes ever filmed. The lyrics are by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons.

About This Version

This is Bennett’s second studio recording of “Smile”; the first was in 1959. It was released as a single and was later included on his 1962 album I Left My Heart In San Francisco. Today’s version was recorded in 1965 and was arranged by Al Cohn and conducted by Johnny Mandel.

About Today

On December 27, 1965, 49 years ago today, Tony Bennett recorded three songs for his upcoming masterpiece The Movie Song Album, which was released in 1966. These three songs were “Smile,” “The Second Time Around,” and “Maybe September.” It was hard to choose a song from these three, but I do love “Smile.”

“Smile,” as well as The Movie Song Album, is available from iTunes.

And yes, it’s Saturday and yes, we have a video. Our video today is from Tony Bennett’s concert at Bumbershoot in Seattle Washington on September 2, 2012. It’s an amateur video and the quality isn’t great. But I was at that performance and I have so many fond memories of the concert; you read about it here. At the end, after a very long standing ovation, he thanked the audience and said “We will remember today for the rest of our lives.” So will we … so will we.

Song of the Day: Smile

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on this day in 1889 in Walworth, UK.  To honor Sir Chaplin, our song of the day for April 16, 2013 is Smile.

About This Song

Charlie Chaplin wrote Smile as an instrumental for his 1936 file Modern Times. John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics in 1954.

The Lyrics

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

About This Version

Today’s version is from Tony Bennett’s The Movie Song Album, released in 1966.  Mr. Bennett has sung this song at the end of every concert of his I have ever attended, always sung with deep heart and love.  It’s always the high point of the concert, at least for me.  And I have to say that when times have gotten tough, I turn to this song every time.

Smile, as well as The Movie Song Album, is available from iTunes.

And, with thanks to YouTube, here is the final scene of Modern Times with Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard with the instrumental version of Smile.

Song of the Day: Smile

The Song of the Day for September 25, 2012 is Smile.

About Smile

The music for the song Smile was written by the film artist Charles “Charlie” Chaplin for his 1936 film Modern Times. The lyrics were added in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons.

About This Version

In the last three concerts of Mr. Bennett’s that I have attended, at the end of the concert, he sings Smile, followed by When You’re Smiling, the Louis Armstrong favorite. I love this sweet and poignant end to his concerts.

Mr. Bennett first recorded this song as a single in 1959 and again in 1962 for I Left My Heart in San Francisco. Today’s version comes from the 1966 The Movie Song Album, which also includes The Shadow of Your Smile, another song that Mr. Bennett frequently sings in his performances.

This version of Smile was arranged by Al Cohn and conducted by Johnny Mandel, with Tommy Flanagan on piano.

Smile

The Song of the Day for July 28, 2012 is Smile, by Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Bennett first recorded this song as single for Columbia in 1959. He’s sung in this song in every concert of his I’ve ever attended and I hope he continues to sing it in the concerts I will be attending in the future. It’s a wistful song that simultaneously brings a smile to my lips and a tear or two to my eyes every time. Today’s link is to his second recording of the song on the album I Left My Heart in San Francisco, recorded in 1962.
