“My Foolish Heart” was written in 1949 by Victor Young and Ned Washington for a widely-panned film My Foolish Heart, based on a J.D. Salinger short story. Time Magazine excoriated the score: “nothing offsets the blight of such tear-splashed excesses as the bloop-bleep-bloop of a sentimental ballad on the soundtrack.”

“Some Other Time” was written by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green for the 1944 musical On The Town, the story of three sailors on leave in New York City and their romantic adventures. This song is sung at the end by two of the couples. Inexplicably, this beautiful song was cut from the 1949 film version.

The song of the day for Thursday, December 25, 2025, the 12th day of a Tony Bennett Christmas is “A Child Is Born.”

About This Song

“A Child Is Born” was written in 1969 by Thad Jones and Alec Wilder. Thad Jones was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra starting in 1954. He left the orchestra in 1963 to pursue a career as an arranger and studio trumpet player and later moved to Denmark. “A Child Is Born” is his best known composition; the wonderful lyrics are by Alec Wilder.

“We’ll Be Together Again” was written in 1945 by Carl T. Fischer and Frankie Laine. Fischer was Laine’s pianist and musical director ane he asked Laine to write the lyrics, which he, quite nicely. In addition to the recording by Tony Bennett and Bill Evans, this song has been recorded by Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra and, of course, Frankie Laine.
