The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Harlem Butterfly

The song of the day for Friday, October 2, 2015 is “Harlem Butterfly.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Harlem Butterfly,” was written in 1956 by Johnny Mercer, who wrote both music and lyrics. Although Mercer is not widely known for writing music, he was quite good at it; another of his attempts was quite successful: “I Wanna Be Around.”

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded “Harlem Butterfly” on October 1, 1971 and released it the following year on the album With Love. The album was arranged and conducted by Robert Farnon and features John Bunch on piano. The album was recorded in London at the Cine-Tele Studios.

Song of the Day: Get Happy

The song of the day for Monday, April 22, 2014 is “Get Happy.”

About This Song

“Get Happy” was written in 1930 by Harold Arlen, with lyrics by Ted Koehler. It was the songwriters’ first collaboration. The song was introduced by Ruth Etting in The Nine-Fifteen Revue. This song was a favorite of Judy Garland; she sang it at most, if not all, of her concerts. She sang and danced the hell out this number in her 1950 movie Summer Stock.

About This Version

Today’s version of “Get Happy” is from his 1971 concert with The London Philharmonic Orchestra. Robert Farnon conducted the orchestra; it was produced by Teo Macero. It is a great live concert and this album is a real favorite of mine.
