About This Song
“Love For Sale” was written by Cole Porter for the 1930 Broadway musical The New Yorkers, written from the viewpoint of a prostitute offering “love for sale.” The song was denounced because of the content and most radio stations refused to play it. More disturbing was the backlash about the song being sung by a white singer. They reset the song to performed in the Cotton Club and sung by a black female singer.
In spite of this, the song did become quite popular. Early recordings include those by Lily Holman and Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians and The Jack Teagarden Orchestra. Other recordings include those by Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Astrud Gilberto, and Elvis Costello. Tony Bennett recorded it in 1957 for his album The Beat of My Heart.
