About This Song
“It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” was written by Duke Ellington, with lyrics by Irving Mills.” The song got its title from Bubber Miley, who played trumpet for Ellington. Miley’s credo, which he said often was “it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.” It was one of the very first songs to use the word “swing” in the title. “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” as well as Bennett Sings Ellington: Hot And Cool, is available on Apple Music.
Other than Ellington’s 1932 recording of “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” is the version that Ellington and Louis Armstrong recorded at The Great Summit, which featured Ellington and Louis Armstrong and His All-Stars. One reason I love this version is that the rarely-heard verse is sung.
