The song of the day for Tuesday, January 1, 2019, is “Dancing in the Dark.”
About This Song
“Dancing in the Dark” was written by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz in 1931 for the revue The Band Wagon and is widely considered to be the finest of the songs written by Schwartz and Dietz. Alec Wilder in American Popular Song describes it as “… a very strong song with a superb, poetic lyric.”
About This Version
Today I’m featuring Tony Bennett’s first recording of “Dancing in the Dark” for the 1961 album My Heart Sings. The excellent arrangement is by Ralph Burns.

I can’t help but include this clip from the 1953 movie The Band Wagon, featuring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse dancing to this song in Central Park. It’s one of my favorite Astaire dances. I’m spending New Year’s Eve watching That’s Entertainment on TCM and, as always, my breath always stops for a moment due to the beauty of this dance.
