The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: She’s Got It Bad

The song of the day for Monday, May 19, 2014 is “She’s Got It Bad.”

About This Song

Duke Ellington wrote “I Got It Bad” in 1941 with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. The song was introduced by Ivie Anderson in Jump For Joy, a revue that ran briefly on the West Coast. The Ivie Anderson recording, with solos by Ellington and Johnny Hodges, did well on the charts, as did a Benny Goodman recording that same year. Other notable recordings include those by Thelonious Monk, Shirley Horn, Oscar Peterson and Etta Jones.

About This Version

Today’s song is from Bennett’s album honoring the work of Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, released in 1999 for the centennial of his birth. “She’s Got It Bad” was orchestrated by Ralph Burns and features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet and Al Grey on trombone.
