The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

June 26, 2016 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: From This Moment On

The song of the day for Monday, June 27, 2016 is “From This Moment On.”

About This Song

Cole Porter originally wrote this song in 1950 for his musical Out Of This World, but it was dropped. It was included in the 1953 film version of Kiss Me Kate in wonderful number that featured Anne Miller and was the basis for a fantastic dance choreographed (and danced) by a young Bob Fosse. The song was used in the 1999 Broadway stage revival of Kiss Me Kate. Doris Day recorded this song as a single in 1950; the Frank Sinatra 1957 recording for his A Swingin’ Affair! was instrumental in the popularity of this song. It has also been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Susannah McCorkle.

About This Version

Tony Bennett recorded this version of “From This Moment On” in 1964 at how show at The Sahara in Las Vegas. Premier Columbian recording engineer Frank Laico recorded the show in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t released until 2011 as part of the Tony Bennett Complete Colllection box set and in 2013 as Tony Bennett Live at the Sahara.

“From This Moment On,” as well as Tony Bennett Live at the Sahara, is available from iTunes.

Since I’ve missed a few Saturdays videos this monrth, I hope to make up for that with this clip from film version of Kiss Me Kate. Look for the very young Bob Fosse. The sound from the big Hollywood orchestra is first-rate.
