“I’m Way Ahead of the Game” was written by Robert Emmett Dolan and Johnny Mercer for the 1964 musical Foxy, which featured Bert Lahr and Larry Blyden. Alas, it only ran for 72 performances, though Bert Lahr won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. No cast album was recorded. This song, however, is terrific and if it’s typical of the score, I’d love to hear it.

Today’s song comes from the recently available CD Tony Bennett Live at the Sahara: Las Vegas, 1964. The CD was released as part of the Complete Collection in 2011 and was made available from iTunes earlier this year. It’s a wonderful concert with many wonderful songs. The Year of Tony Bennett gives it two thumbs up. Way up.
