Cole Porter wrote “Dream Dancing” for the 1941 movie You’ll Never Get Rich, though it was introduced only in its instrumental form. The first recording of the song, with lyrics, was made by Fred Astaire in the same year, with The Delta Rhythm Boys. Other recordings include those by Ella Fitzgerald, Zoot Sims with Jimmy Rowles, and Mel Tormé.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Dream Dancing” in 1977 for their second album, Together Again. However, the recording was not including on the original LP release. It was added for the 1999 Rhino CD release and on all subsequent releases of Together Again.

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans on Film!

The Year of Tony Bennett is very pleased to bring this video to our readers.

In 1976, Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded their second album Together Again. Soon afterwards, the pair was filmed singing a selection songs from both their albums by a Canadian filmmaker named Bernard Picard. The 27 minute film was broadcast by the Canadian Broadcast Corporation in May 1977.

The song of the day for Sunday, January 17, 2016 is “You Don’t Know What Love Is.”

About This Song

“You Don’t Know What Love Is” was written in 1941 by Gene de Paul and Don Raye. It was written for a 1941 Abbott and Costello film called Keep ‘Em Flying, but was cut from the film before it opened. The song was finally used in a B picture named Behind the Eight Ball. “You Don’t Know What Love Is” gradually became a jazz standard, as evidenced by the Miles Davis recording from 1954. Other significant jazz recordings included those by Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Anita O’Day and Nina Simone.
