“There’s a Small Hotel” was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1937. Originally written for the musical Jumbo, “There’s A Small Hotel” was used the next year in On Your Toes, where it was introduced by Ray Bolger and Doris Carson. The song has been recorded by artists including Chet Baker, Josephine Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Della Reese, in addition to Tony Bennett.

Tony Bennett recorded “There’s a Small Hotel” in July 1973 for the album Tony Bennett Sings More Great Rodgers & Hart, released in 1977.

About This Song

Originally written for the musical Jumbo by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, “There’s A Small Hotel” was used the next year in On Your Toes, where it was introduced by Ray Bolger and Doris Carson. The song has been recorded by artists including Chet Baker, Josephine Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Della Reese, in addition to Tony Bennett. In a biography of Lorenz Hart, he is quoted as saying that, “the song was inspired by a visit that Richard Rodgers made to the Stockton Inn, in Stockton, NJ.”

About This Version

Nothing too special about today’s song, other than it’s light and sweet and has a nice cornet solo about halfway through. Nice to listen to.
