The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

July 17, 2025 By Suzanne Leave a Comment

Song of the Day: Lucky To Be Me

The song of the day for Thursday, July. 17, 2025, is “Lucky To Be Me.”

About This Song

“Lucky To Be Me” was written by Leonard Bernstein, Adolph Green, and Betty Comden for the 1944 Broadway musical On The Town, where it was introduced by John Battles. The song (as were most of the songs from the score) was cut from the 1949 film.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Lucky To Be Me” in September 1976, for their second album, Together Again, released in 1977.

“Lucky To Be Me,” as well as Together Again, is available on Apple Music.

In late 1976, Tony Bennett and Bill Evans did a concert of the songs in Together Again for CBC, the Canadian public broadcasting network, including “Lucky To Be Me.”

Tony Bennett Interviews

Two very thoughtful interviews have come to our attention this week.

First is from our friends at JazzTimes Magazine, conducted by Roseanne Vitro. The introduction to this interview contains this statement that I believe 100%:

There are artists whose impact on the planet is incalculable. Tony Bennett is one of them.

You can read the article online at the JazzTimes website.

Second is from the archives at the Canadian Broadcast Corporation that were recorded in the late 1960s or early 1970s. We want to thank the great people at The Notes You Don’t Play blog for seeking out this interview and providing links to it. The Notes You Don’t Play site is devoted to interviews with jazz musicians … they are doing great work and deserve our support. Visit the The Notes You Don’t Play website to get the links to this wonderful interview.
