The song of the day for Tuesday, March 31, 2015 is “The Rules of the Road.”
About This Song
“The Rules of the Road” was written in 1961 by Cy Coleman (music) and Carolyn Leigh (lyrics). While Coleman and Leigh are best-known for their scores for Broadway musicals, such as Little Me and Wildcat, “The Rules of the Road” was not written for a show. In addition to several recordings by Tony Bennett, the song has also been recorded by Lena Horne, Shirley Horne, Nat King Cole and Rosemary Clooney.
About This Version
Tony Bennett has recorded this song several times and I love them all. Today, though, I’m like his 1964 recording for When Lights Are Low, featuring the Ralph Sharon Trio. This version has a slower tempo and is more introspective than his other recordings. I do love how it starts with no accompaniment at all. Just this wonderful voice.
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve featured this song as the song of the day. I can’t not feature this song several times a year. I appreciate your patience with me.
“The Rules of the Road,” as well as When Lights Are Low, is available from iTunes.
