The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Some Other Time

The song of the day for Saturday, December 1, 2023, is “Some Other Time.”

About Today

Today we are celebrating the birth of Adolph Green, who was born on December 1, 1914, in The Bronx. He worked with his writing partner Betty Comden from 1944 until his death in 2002. Comden and Green worked with composers including Leonard Bernstein (On The Town and Wonderful Town), Jule Styne (Bells Are Ringing, Do Re Me, and Subways Are For Sleeping), and Cy Coleman (On The Twentieth Century and The Will Rogers Follies). Comden and Green also wrote the screenplay for the 1952 movie Singin’ In The Rain.

In 1985, Stephen Sondheim cast Adolph Green and Betty Comden as Emily and Theodore Whitman, ex-vaudevillians in their seventies to sing “Rain on the Roof.”

Note: This clip also has Liliane Montevecchi singing “Ah, Paris!” and the amazing Elaine Stritch singing “Broadway Baby.”

About This Song

“Some Other Time” was composed by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Adolph Green and Betty Comden, for the first musical written by these three: On The Town, which opened on Broadway in 1944. This song is sung at the end by two of the couples. Inexplicably, this beautiful song was cut from the 1949 film version.

About This Version

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans recorded “Some Other Time” in June 1975 for The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album.

“Some Other Time,” as well as The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album, is available on Apple Music.

I also have a recording of “Some Other Time” from a 1959 studio recording of On The Town. The recording features Adolph Green, Betty Comden, Nancy Walkerm and Cris Alexander.`
