Duke Ellington wrote “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart” in 1938; the lyrics were done by Irving Mills, Henry Nemo and John Redmond. It was a major hit for Duke Ellington, reaching #1 on the charts. In addition to his own recording that year, other recordings by Benny Goodman and Mildred Bailey were made that year and were extremely popular as well. In 1952, Ellington named this song as one of his eleven favorites of the songs he wrote. It’s a favorite of the Year of Tony Bennett as well.

I was stationed in Korea from 1961 to 1962 and I recall a Tony Bennett interview I heard on Armed Forces Radio. I believe the interviewer was Oscar Brand on a program Popular American Song. What made such a lasting impression on me was how Bennett, while answering a question, most easily and naturally began to sing I Let a Song Go Out of My Life. I have often remembered the interview and the ease with which he entered the song…it was magical. Do you know if that interview exists? I have not found it in my searches…
