“Blues in the Night” was written in 1941 for the film of the same name by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. Arlen wrote the music first and wrote a true blues song. Johnny Mercer, who later wrote the lyrics, drew on his southern heritage to write the exceptional blues lyrics. in fact, Mercer had scrawled “my mama done told me” in the margins of his copy of the music. Arlen saw it and pronounced it “perfect.” And perfect the lyrics for “Blues In The Night” are.

Tony Bennett recorded “Blues In The Night” in 1957 for his second jazz album: The Beat of My Heart. The album, conceived by Bennett, used percussionists to augment the Ralph Sharon arrangements. “Blues in the Night” featured Chico Hamilton.
