Cole Porter wrote “Night and Day” for the 1932 Broadway musical The Gay Divorce, where it was introduced by Fred Astaire. The film version of the piece was renamed to The Gay Divorceé, also starring Fred Astaire, and was released in 1934.
“Night and Day” remains one of Porter’s most popular songs and has been widely recorded by artists including Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
