The song of the day for Friday, January 23, 2015 is “I Wish I Were In Love Again.”
About This Song
Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart wrote “I Wish I Were In Love Again” for the 1937 musical Babes in Arms. It was a favorite song of Judy Garland, who recorded it in 1940. Other recordings include those by Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Audra McDonald.
It’s a classic Hart lyric: the beautiful, romantic title … and then:
When love congeals, it soon reveals
The faint aroma of performing seals
The double-crossing of a pair of heels
I wish I were in love again
How can you not love a good Rodgers and Hart song?
About This Version
Tony Bennett recorded I Wish I Were In Love Again for his 1973 album Tony Bennett Sings … More Great Rodgers and Hart. Both of the Rodgers and Hart albums featured the Ruby Braf-George Barnes Quartet: Braf on cornet, Barnes and Wayne Wright on guitar, and John Guiffrida on bass. It’s a wonderful sound.
“I Wish I Were In Love Again,” as well as all of the songs on The Complete Improv Recordings, is available from iTunes.
