The song of the day for Tuesday, December 30, 2014 is “Cheek To Cheek.”
About This Song
Irving Berlin wrote “Cheek To Cheek” for the 1935 film Top Hat, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, where it was introduced (beautifully) by Fred Astaire. Though the song was nominated for an Academy Award (it lost to “Lullaby Of Broadway”), it became a hit in 1935 and has remained popular to this day. Significant recordings include those by Harry James, Glenn Miller, Roy Eldridge, Bing Crosby and many, many more.
About This Version
Today’s version is from 2014, Bennett’s duet with Lady Gaga for the album of the same name. The arrangement is by the great Marion Evans. It doesn’t get much better than this.
About Today
We choose this song today as Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga kick off their world tour in Las Vegas. It goes without saying that tickets to this and tomorrow night’s concert are hard to come by. Both performances have been officially sold out for weeks. You can pay $150 on the resale market if you don’t mind standing in the back. Oh, I’d do that in a minute! I’ll be posting reviews and tweets from those in attendance on the December 2014 tour news topic.
“Cheek To Cheek,” as well as the album Cheek To Cheek, is available from iTunes.
