The Year of Tony Bennett

An Appreciation of the Art and Music of Tony Bennett

Song of the Day: Manhattan

The song of the day for Wednesday, June 10, 2015 is “Manhattan.”

About This Song

Written for the Garrick Gaieties in 1925, “Manhattan” is an early Rodgers and Hart song. The song was introduced by the Sterling Holloway. The song made its first film appearance the following year in a short entitled Makers of Melody. The song has remained popular up to today and is frequently recorded by jazz and popular singers. In addition to Bennett’s recording, “Manhattan” has been recorded by Blossom Dearie, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé and Dinah Washington. It is often used in films, including Silent Movie, Mighty Aphrodite and The English Patient.

In 1924, the writing team of Rodgers and Hart seemed rather stalled. So much so that Rodgers felt compelled to look for a day job. A job selling baby’s underwear was offered for $50 a week; Rodgers asked for 24 hours to think it over. That evening during dinner with his parents (or so the story goes), he gets a call with an offer to write the music for the Garrick Gaieties revue. And so they wrote the song “Manhattan.”

About This Version

It’s only natural that Tony Bennett, the ultimate New Yorker, would sing this song by Rodgers and Hart. I really like this arrangement and the work from The Ruby Braff / George Barnes Quartet is perfect.

About Today

As you may know, Tony Bennett has the flu and had to cancel his 2nd concert in London. Please join The Year of Tony Bennett in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Song of the Day: Lover

The song of the day for Sunday, June 7, 2015 is “Lover.”

About This Song

Today’s song, “Lover,” was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1932 for the film Love Me Tonight, starring Jeanette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier. It was introduced in the film by Jeannette MacDonald.

About This Version

“Lover” may be unfamiliar to many fans of Rodgers and Hart songs, though it’s a lovely song. The lyrics feature the dichotomy of love that Hart often wrote of:

Since you took control of my life
You have become the whole of my life
When you are away its awful
And when you are with me its worse

The song, in its own gentle way, has a drive and unending beat. I find it quite interesting to listen to.

Song of the Day: The Lady Is A Tramp

The song of the day for Saturday, June 6, 2015 is “The Lady Is A Tramp.”

About This Song

“The Lady Is A Tramp” was written in 1937 for the Broadway musical Babes In Arms by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, where it was introduced by Mitzi Green. The song was meant as a spoof on the high society of New York, where the singer is clear about what she likes to do, no matter what everyone else is doing. “The Lady Is A Tramp” has been sung by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. More recently, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga sang a duet of this song on their 2011 album “Duets II.”

About This Version

No, it’s not that version (though if that’s what you’re wanting, check the end of the post). Today’s version of “The Lady Is A Tramp” was recorded in 1973 with the Ruby Braff/George Barnes Quartet and was Bennett’s first recording of the song; he also recorded it in 1988 as a duet with Frank Sinatra and again in 1992 for Perfectly Frank. And, of course, in 2011 with Lady Gaga.

I do love this early version–in fact, I love all of these Rodgers and Hart songs from 1973. The quartet led by Ruby Braff and George Barnes evoke the 1930s for me and the songs seem so fresh to me when sung from that perspective. Oh, and he sings the verse!

About Today

Once again, it’s Saturday and that means video. And since our song is “The Lady Is a Tramp,” what video could more perfect than the duet with Lady Gaga? This version may be new to you; it’s from Lady Gaga’s 2011 Thanksgiving television show. Enjoy!

Song of the Day: Blue Moon

The song of the day for Thursday, June 4, 2015 is “Blue Moon.”

About This Song

“Blue Moon” was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart sometime in 1932 or 1933. Its first title was “Prayer” and was written for Jean Harlow to sing for a film called Hollywood Revue of 1933, which was never produced. New lyrics were added and so the song became known as “The Bad In Every Man” and was sung by Shirley Ross in the 1934 film Manhattan Melodrama. Finally, in 1934 the lyrics were written once again, this time the ones we know so well, “Blue Moon.”

The song has been popular from then to now, though not so much to critic Alec Wilder, who wrote in his wonderful book American Popular Song that, “It certainly is one of the most performed of the Rodgers and Hart songs. I have never been attracted to it, though I recognize it to be competently written.”

Well, I think it’s a very nice song.

About This Version

Though some feel that the song is a bit too precious to take seriously, Tony Bennett sings it with great respect and charm. And, once again, he sings the verse!

Song of the Day: This Can’t Be Love

The song of the day for Monday, June 1, 2015 is “This Can’t Be Love.”

About This Song

“This Can’t Be Love” was written in 1938 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart for their music The Boys Of Syracuse. I’ve always found it to be one of their least ironic and loveliest songs.

The_Boys_From_Syracuse-2

The musical The Boys Of Syracuse was based on Shakespeare’s A Comedy Of Errors. It was directed by George Abbott (who also wrote the book) and was choreographed by Jerome Robbins. The production ran for 235 performances.

In addition to this wonderful song, the score also contains two other favorites of mine: “Falling In Love With Love” and “Sing For Supper.”

Tony Bennett recorded Falling In Love With Love in 1965 for If I Ruled The World: Songs For the Jet Set and was arranged by Don Costa. It was released as bonus track on the CD reissue.

This version of “Sing For Your Supper” is from a 1997 studio recording of an Encores production that restored the original 1938 arrangements. The singers are Rebecca Luker, Debbie Gravitte and Sarah Uriarte Berry. Their trio is delightful.

About This Version

“This Can’t Be Love” was the first cut on Tony Bennett Sings 10 Rodgers & Hart Songs. It’s a fun, uptempo song that’s perfect to open the album with. I was completely sold as soon as I heard the first guitar chords followed by Bennett starting the song. Really, it’s perfect.
